Verifying Values

I value laughter. You can tell this because I have rewritten this blog four times trying to make it funny. Instead I finally realized values are a pretty serious topic. More serious even then math, history, or science (but don’t tell your teachers!)

I value safety. I am a nurse who gives medications hundreds of times a day that if given wrong, could kill the person who came to the hospital to get better. The fact that I check the medication before giving it to my patients-even though it slows me down, demonstrates how important I think safety is.

I value honesty. When my friends ask me if I think they were overreacting- well, they had better be prepared for the candid answer (most times, “YES!”)

I value health. Which is why I have to drag my bottom out of bed every morning and go to the class with the overexcited instructor at the YMCA who obviously had 7-8 cups of coffee this morning before 8am.

Overall though, I always thought values seemed like a weird topic to start with for a health class. Health class seems like something you take to learn about what makes you sick, and how to eat right so you stay fit and don’t get sick at all. So where do your values fit in?

Your values guide your decisions. (Hopefully). That’s how they fit- that’s why they are important in a health class. If you are someone who lives by your values, that should show in your life. Someone should be able to look at your decisions, and then determine your values.

If you value honesty-you don’t cheat on your math test. You do your own studying and you pass on your own work.

If you value family- you spend time with them, speak well of them and to them. (the second part is obviously harder, because siblings can wear on your last nerve!)

I think you get the idea- but why does it matter in health class? In health class you will learn what makes you sick, how to eat right, how to stay fit and how your body works. But if you do not value your health, or nutrition or fitness, you will not utilize the strategies you learn.

The second reason values are important, is because living by your values has an even greater impact on your health. Consider these facts:

·      In a study by Ryff, Singer, and Love, women who lived purposeful, value driven lives studied as they aged showed lower production of stress hormones, longer periods of REM sleep, and lower levels of cardiovascular risk.

·      A study in Canada completed in 2009, showed that having positive affect (positive attitude-something achieved by living according to your values) was protective against coronary heart disease.

·      Women who flashed a Duchene (natural) smile in their freshman year book photos report being 25% more satisfied in their marriages later on.

The list can go on and on and on. Living by your values is not just good for your health in general, it may be protective of your heart, and for all you freshman girls- possibly for your marriages later! So now that we’ve talked briefly about values, its time to answer a few questions to solidify your understanding

1.    What are your top 4 values?

2.  How can someone tell what those values you just wrote down are? (Meaning, what in your life, what decisions can you point at to prove that those are your values?)

3. What are two reasons values are important to your health?

4.  How are values and decision-making related?

5.  Visit at least two of the hyperlinked websites. Explain two of the following concepts (WITHOUT COPY/PASTING): heart disease risk factors, stress hormones, REM sleep, Coronary heart disease.

6. How do you know a website you are linked to or referencing is a scholarly, or acceptable website? Use one of the websites you visited as an example.

  1. Values
    1. My top four values are the following: God and His word, my relationships, my God-given abilities to do simple things- like walk-and God’s creation, or nature. I would say these are my top four values because they give me the closest thing to fulfillment and joy in life. These four things are the things that make my life worthwhile and true. They make me cherish, value, life itself.
    2. The people around me can tell that these are my top values in my life because of the way I treat my friends, my body and God’s creation. Okay, I will admit to my faults, that I don’t ALWAYS treat everyone and everything perfectly, but you get what I mean. More specifically, I choose to treat my friends like they have value by being there to listen. Also, I choose to eat healthy and be active to keep my body, my temple, healthy for God’s glory.
    3. Two reasons values are important to me are the following: they help me keep my priorities straight, as well as help keep my standards high for myself. If one value loses its value to some degree, let’s say “God and His word,” and is replaced by something else less valuable, then not only are my priorities messed up, but so is my life. Values keep me in-check with myself so I can remember what is truly important and what is truly important to value in life.
    4. Values and decision making are related by foundation. If you set your values as your foundation, you will eventually land on the step of decision-making. Once you get to the step of decision-making, you can reference back to your values and evaluate what the wrong decision would be and what the right decision would be, then finally make your decision. Thus, having good values can lead to good decisions!
    5. I chose REM sleep and Cardiovascular Risk as my two hyperlink sites. REM sleep stands for Rapid Eye Movement sleep. This is the period of time where we dream! Although REM sleep occurs for only about 20% of our sleep, it is the most memorable and perhaps the most fun part about sleeping. This happens about three to five times a night and it takes place about ninety minutes per night. During the REM span, our brain waves are of low-voltage and irregular breathing and muscle jerks may occur. On the other hand, Cardiovascular Risk is just a fancy word for saying heart disease risk. This can be caused by certain things you can, or even can’t control. For example, you can’t control being older, your family history, or your race, but all of these things can go against you in your possibility of having a heart attack/heart disease. However, you can control whether you smoke, are over-weight, and your cholesterol. All of these things can cause heart failure as well. The easiest way to make sure you keep your heart healthy is to eat well, exercise regularly, and stay away from cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol.
    6. I can tell a website I am referencing to is an acceptable website by is representation. If the website has a whole bunch of viruses and the grammar or set up is easily identifiable as cheap or inadequate, it is obviously not good to use as a reference. For example, the hyperlinks I used for REM sleep and Cardiovascular Risk were reliable because I recognized their names (Webmd.com and MedicineNet.com) and could tell that knowledgeable people wrote them.

  2. My 4 top values are integrity, honor, loyalty, and health. People that know me can defiantly say I have integrity because I always get embarrassed when I mess up or do something wrong. I try to be fair to everybody and if something is wrong im quick to act about it. It may seem old fashion and cliché but I do believe in holding honor to myself my friends and my family I hate to disappoint them. Whenever I do something I try to do it right, for example I try to be loyal to my friends and support them when they have gotten into something bad. And this is health class so im pretty sure I have to write about health. It is very important because with out health we couldn’t do anything. Without health we cannot go to parties or hang out with friends, in some conditions we cant eve leave the house. I just listed my two reasons for why health is important so…. moving on! Values and making choices are very related. when you don’t value or respect something then you don’t want to do it, then if you don’t want to do it then you do a really poor job. and if you do a poor job then it leads on and on with a cause and effect type.

the concept of having heart disease is pretty basic idea to explain: its where your heart or arteries in the heart are affected by a disease or blood clot, with having heart disease most of the symptoms are very obvious, having high blood pressure or if you have blood clots can lead to heart disease

when you have a lot of stress you release stress hormones which help you deal with it. this regulating system is known as the endocrine system which helps you deal with a vary of problems. if you have a problem with the endocrine system it can change your blood pressure you mood how you act, and can hamper your growth.

I would usually trust a website for health information only if it has a .org .gov .edu, most of the time if I have health question I would go to my doctor. like for instance I went to the heart disease foundation to write about heart disease, this website had an .edu at the end of it so I knew it was legitimate. 3. 1. My top four values are my family, to do good at school, to work out and do good at sports, and to live a life glorifying to God.

    2. For my family a way that I show them that they are one of my values of my life is by spending time with them. A way that I show that I want to do good at school is by studying hard for my tests and doing all of my homework. A way that I can show that working out and doing good in sports is by going to the voluntary work outs every day after school when they are open. And a way I can show that glorifying God through my life is one of my values is because I try to go to church as much as I can.

    3. Two reasons why your values are important to your health is because normally your values revolve around you having the best and most healthy life porrible for yourself because that is what most people want for themselves. Also they are important because if you choose to follow through on your values you wont want to waste your hard work for your values on not being healthy.

    4. The values you set for yourself is normally the way you want to act and live so the better values you set for yourself the better actions you will probably have.

    5. Some heart disease risk factors are high blood pressure/cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, being over weight, and being physically inactive. Stress horomones are horomones released when the body is under great amounts of stress and some of the horomones realeased are cortisol, GH, and norepinephrine.

    6. One of the websites I went to is www.nhlbi.nih.gov. I know it is scholarly because it is the official website for heart lung and blood institute and it was made by the People Science Health group.

  4. My top four values are God, fitness, relationships, and freedom.

People can tell I value God because of my actions and how I am different because of

God being in my life. They can tell that He is a big part of me by not only how I act

but also by what I say and how I look on the outside. I try to let His light shine

through me as best as I can. People can tell I value fitness (and health) because of

how I love to run and because of the sports I participate in. If I did not care about my

fitness, then I would most likely not be participating in any sports and it would show

more on my body. People can tell I value relationships because of how I try to reach

out to people, despite our differences. I try to be a friend to all, but sometimes it is

hard. Relationships are very important to me because I believe that in order for

someone to maintain an upbeat, happy, and healthy lifestyle, they need to not only

have an ongoing and close relationship with God, but also with other people. The

different variety of people you meet and interact with everyday really affect how

happy and content you are with and in your life. Lastly, people can tell I value

freedom by how I exercise my freedom rights in the classroom, with friends, and

even respectfully to some authority when I have a different viewpoint or opinion.

Two reasons why values are important to your health is because they give you a

goal to reach for based on what is important to you and because they give you

a sense of direction for where you want to see yourself down the road. If you don’t

have any values, then your health won’t be very important to you and you will get

very unhealthy and probably not feel very good about yourself either (both on the

    inside and on the outside).

Values and decision-making are related because you make decisions based on what

is or is not important to you. For example, if you value your fitness and health, then

you will make healthy eating choices and exercise to keep your body fit. If you don’t

value your fitness and health, then you won’t care what you eat and if you even

exercise or not. It won’t matter to you.

Coronary heart disease is when plaques builds up in your heart arteries over a

period of several years, but then limits the amount of oxygen to your heart. This

limitation can lead to a heart attack or even death. Some risks that elevate your

chances of getting heart disease are having male sex, family history, older age,

and smoking. Heart disease is a disease that affects the heart and can cause heart

attacks, congestive heart failure, and other failures of the heart that can lead to

    death.

You know if a website is scholarly, acceptable, or legit because it will list the author’s

name, date the article was published, or reference to where they got their

information. Also, if it is a government site, then it is also legit. An example is the

website, www.nhlbi.nih.gov, which talks about the coronary heart disease. It is a

government website, so it is legit.

  5. Verifying Values
1.My top four values are mostly based around the Lord and my family. My very first one would have to be, and every Christian should be, my salvation in Jesus. Secondly would be serving at my church and helping in ministry. Thirdly, my family including my parents and my siblings. And finally, my high gene because I love to be clean.
2.To prove my salvation in the Lord is really how I act and my routine in the morning and the afternoon. And if you just follow me to church you will see me doing slides on sundays and wednesday. Some people say that hanging out with their family is lame but I can’t go with out them.
3.If you don’t have any values in life then how are you going to get anywhere in life. Not only in life but with no motives you want to go exercise or run that marathon or climb that hill. Or if you don’t value cleanliness you will probably have a shorter life expectancy.
4.Decision making and values are like a hand in hand type of deal. One example is when you are actually working to get paid or have a real job if you value that job and are thankful for it you obviously you will decide to work hard. And if you don't then you'll most like have a boss who values his hard workers and will probably fire you.
5.One of the concepts I chose was REM sleep witch is the part of our sleep where we dream. The "REM" stands for Rapid Eye Movement and all of the population of the earth experience. The other concept that I picked was stress hormones. This is when liquids secrete and these liquids are catecholamines, corticosteroids, adrenocorticotropin and the way they act is the type and amount of stress you will have.
6.The way I that my my website is scholarly is the title or url. But if you just go to scholarly from google you will know it is an ok website.

    ReplyDelete
  6. 1. My top 4 values are God, family, relationships, and honesty.
    2. People could tell that I value those things because of what I do. I value God, so I go to church and a Christian school. I value family, so I spend time with them. I value relationships, so I try to be nice so my relationships can last longer. Lastly, I value honesty, so I try to be completely honest with everyone in hope that they will be honest to me also.
    3. Values are important to health because having values is makes you happy and can affect how you treat your body, like eating habits and exercising habits.
    4. Values and decision-making are related because if you have a choice where one choice has to do with your values and the other does not, chances are you will choose the choice where your values come into play.
    5. REM sleep is the part of your sleep where you have rapid eye movement, which is what “REM” stands for. REM sleep is when dreams occur. When we sleep we usually only get about three to five periods of REM sleep. These periods occur at intervals of one to two hours and are different in length. They can last 5 minutes or maybe up to an hour. Cortisol and Norepinephrine are the two main major stress hormones that are released when we experience small or big stress. Cortisol raises blood pressure, blood sugar, and suppresses the immune system. If Cortisol is released for a long time it can be dangerous. Norepinephrine causes the heart rate to increase, stored glucose to release, and increased blood flow in a couple muscles. Back and body pain can happen due to the tension in muscles that is caused from Norepinephrine.
    6. You can tell a website is a legit or not by the way it looks, or if it is made by a well-known organization that specializes in the topic you are researching. The link for “REM sleep” is part of WebMD, which is known for their medical knowledge.

  7. 1. My top four values are honesty, faith, family, and health.

    2. People can tell what my values are by watching what I do and who I hang out with. I have very honest friends, and I try not to lie. I try to pray multiple times a day. I also try to read the Bible every night. I always try to make the smarter decision on what I am to eat, and to eat a lot of vegetables. I also enjoy spending time with my family, and going to sporting events to cheer them on.

    3. Values are important to health because if you do not value yourself then you might do something that could potentially hurt you. If you do not have values then it will affect your social life; which in turn affects the rest of your life.

    4. Values and decision-making are related because if you have no values you have a better chance of making a poor decision than one that has values.

    5. Stress hormones are secreted when you are under a lot of stress. These hormones are called Norepinephrine, and cortisol. Cortisol causes your blood pressure to go up and also increase in your blood sugar. Norepinephrine causes your heart rate to go up, and causes the glucose to be released. Coronary heart disease is caused by the build up of plaque in your coronary arteries. The plaque build up over time can stop the flow of oxygen rich blood from getting into your heart. The result of this happening is a heart attack.

    6. You can tell a website is not a good source by reading through some of the information, and comparing it to other websites. If you look at the top of the page it will usually tell you what group pit the information up; so by looking at the credibility of the group you can tell if the website is credible. You can also tell by the domain of the website.

  8. Values
I have many values. My top value is following the Bible. Another one of my values is having the right motive for something. If someone donates to a homeless shelter, but only because they wanted tax cuts, then they aren’t being as good as someone who donates because they want something better for the homeless. My other two values focus on doing well in school, and being grateful for what you have.
I think people can tell I follow the Bible because I try to dress modestly and also strain (but it’s pretty hard) to listen to music that Glorifies God. I don’t listen to worship songs all the time, but rather ask myself if I would be ok if He was standing right by me while I listened to it. My friends know that I don’t like when people go to church just to stare at some guy or something. You should go to church because you want to focus on God, not a hot guy. I focus on getting all A’s in school, which shows dedication, and if something doesn’t go my way, I try to think, “What do I have that others don’t?” and list things in my head.
If you value your video games a lot, then you probably don’t value getting exercise as much. Similarly, valuing a sport you might play encourages you to practice it often, resulting in a well-running body.
People tend to make decisions based on what they believe in. You might argue that Pilot, for example, made a choice that he didn’t believe in. However, it really means that he valued other’s opinions over his own.
Cortisol causes high blood pressure when you take a lot of it. It, along with Norepinephrine, are stress hormones. Norepinephrine increases your heart rate and makes you release sugar for energy. To me, stress hormones sound a bit like adrenaline, which is also released in stressful situations. Coronary Heart Disease, on the other hand, is when plaque builds up in your arteries. This is obviously not good for you. It’s the number one heart disease, but it doesn’t happen overnight. It slowly builds up from not eating a healthy diet.
Www.nhlbi.nih.gov is a site that I visited about CHD. It’s government-runned (as evidenced by the “.gov”), so I know that it’s a serious professional site.

  9. 1) My top 4 values are God, family, church, be treated the way you want to be treated, and have fun in everything that you do. I chose all of these because it means everything to me, never lets me down, and can come in handy when in a time of need. I definitely need God in my life because without him things would be tough to face alone in my life. Family is always there for you know matter what and we face things together. Church is my life and I always learn something new and just wanting to be a servant leader too makes my day for myself and others around me too and how I can impact them with one small thing. I most definitely love to have fun in everything I do because it makes things easier than how others but it.
2)How people can tell when I am using my values is when I have a smile everywhere I go, being myself in every situation, know that nothing can ruin my day, and when I show my light or happiness to others who need it in their life.
3)Two reasons that my values are important to my health is that I wouldn’t be stressed out on things like work or drama, having a great spirit and just making the day your best day ever, or even just being prepared for anything that comes my way.
    4) The values and decision makings are related buy how you react to things or choices you made and would follow. Also it shows how you can de an example in other’s lives. Being smart in everything you do.
    5) I chose heart diseases and stress hormones. A heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States Stress hormones start by emotional and physical responses to things in your everyday life.
    6) The websites you know are a scholarly or an acceptable by if it’s the persons point of view or if they have info at the top or bottom of there page.

I would say that my top 4 values are family, god, fitness, and health. The reasons that I picked these qualities are because these things all mean the world to me. I would say that God is my highest value because without him I would be absolutely nothing! Family is a great thing to have because they will love you through whatever you are going through. Fitness is a great way to have a healthy life style and live longer. The reason I like fitness is it makes you way more attractive to ladies and it will help me with whatever sports I will play. Health is a huge factor in whatever you do because it can refrain you from playing any sports or something. The ways I can show these values to other people are to show god means a lot to me I go to a Christian school and surround myself with much better people that will keep me on the right track. The ways I will show people and my family that they are important to me is I will do anything for them when they need it. They ways I will show my fitness is I will work out as much as I can and you will see the results. The ways I will show my health care I will take care of my body in every way possible. Values are important to my health because if you have values you won’t let you life spiral out of control. Decision making and values are related by when you make decisions it’s you values that help you make that decision. I chose REM sleep which stands for rapid eye sleep. It occurs for only about 20 percent of our sleep but this is the time when we dream. It’s the most memorable part about sleeping. I know if a website is reliable or acceptable by seeing if it has correct grammar and if it doesn’t look fake or anything. I visited Google for my example I know that that is a reliable site that everyone uses.

  11. 1. My 4 values are walking with God, getting along with my friends and family, doing well academically and physically, and being healthy in body, mind, and spirit.
    2. I try to read the Bible regularly and pray regularly as well. I am social; I talk to my friends a lot. I am close to my family too. I do well academically by studying, doing my homework and trying to pay attention in class. I want to do well physically and in sports. I do this by working out and exercising regularly. I want to be healthy in body, mind, and spirit. I do this by doing all the other things I spoke about.
    3. They are important so I don’t just sit around all day and do nothing. Also so I have goals in life.
    4. Values and decision making are related because the decisions I make will have an impact on my values and normally decisions are based on values.
    5. First I looked at REM sleep. REM stands for Rapid-Eye-Movement. Dreams occur during REM sleep. We usually have 3-5 periods of REM sleep. They occur in 1-2 hour intervals and vary in length. They might be 5 minutes to over an hour in duration. When REM sleeping, our brains emit rapid, low-voltage brain waves, we have irregular heart rate and breathing. We also may have involuntary muscle jerks. Only about 20% of sleep is REM. I looked at Coronary heart disease next. Coronary Heart disease is a condition where plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries. These arteries take blood to the heart. Plaque is made of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances. The buildup plaque occurs over the course of many years. Over time the plaque hardens in the arteries, which limits the flow of blood to the heart. Eventually the plaque can rupture. When this happens a blood clot will form on the plaque and can potentially completely restrict blood from going to the heart. If this happens the oxygen rich blood doesn’t come to the heart and the heart begins to die, which can cause heart attacks which a lot of the time will lead to death. Coronary heart disease is the most common heart disease and is also the #1 cause of death in the United States.
    6. The coronary heart disease site is created by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

  12. 1. My four top values are: being a good Christian, being healthy, doing well in school, friends, family, basically my social life, and music. I say these are my top values because being a good Christian is what God calls us to, leading others to him and having a good life. While being healthy is how we take care of ourselves and honoring what God made. I value my social life because I think having good grades gets you a better future, while having good friends impacts who you are, and my family is who I’m around all the time and I love them. I always listen to music because it keeps me awake and pumped for working out, or getting me in a good mood.

    2. People can tell that I have these values by the way I act. I try to be a good Christian by treating others well, and having a nice outlook on life. With being healthy, I work out everyday and eat the right kinds of food. With my social life, I get good grades, though as of late they could’ve been better. But I have friends that help me when I don’t understand things and family to support. i think I’m funny so I have quite a few friends. And with music, I ALWAYS have it. No matter where I am.

    3. Two reasons values are important to your health is because they affect how you look at life and how you live it. Having values also affects the actions and choices you make when you’re faced with difficult decisions. Values make up who you are and what kind of person you are.

    4. Values and decision making are related because with the values you have, they make you the person that you are. With the right kinds of values you’ll make the right choice. But with the wrong values you the choice you make could be the completely wrong one that destroys your life.

    5. I chose stress hormones and REM sleep. When people suffer from acute of chronic stress, there are two main hormones that are released, cortisol and norepinephrine. Cortisol lowers the immune system, increases blood pressure and blood sugar. While norephinephrine causes the heart rate to increase and stored glucose to be released. Both cause diabetes and are harmful to the body. REM sleep is rapid eye movement sleep, where dreams occur. REM sleep usually occurs about 3 to 5 times per night and occur at intervals of 1 to 2 hours. It can be characterized by irregular breathing and heart rate and involuntary muscle jerks and rapid, low-voltage brain waves.

    6. I can tell if a website I visit is scholarly when it has “.gov” or “.org” at the end of the website. I can tell if it’s acceptable when it’s written professionally with good grammar and punctuation. I could tell the hyperlinks I used for the stress hormones and REM sleep were professionally written and well made with statistics and percentages.

  13. My first value is physical activity. I chose this value because I always have to be doing something active. I can never keep still, and I always need to be moving around. My second value is trust. I chose this value because trust is very important to me. Nothing bugs me more than a friend who is not trust worthy. I also don’t feel right if I don’t tell the truth. My third value is humor. I always like making things funny. Life is so much better with humor. My fourth value is friendship. I chose this value because if I did not have friends, life would be very boring. Friends give you someone to hang out with and talk to.
People can see my values because I am always doing something active or athletic. I try to always be trustworthy and honest. They can see my third value because I am always trying to make something funny, it does not always work, but I try. Also, I am always trying to be a good friend.
Your values are important to your health because your values are what effect your decisions. If you do not make the right decision for your body then it will not be as healthy. Another way your values affect your health is how active you are. The more active, the healthier.
Your values affect your decisions because your values are what your life is around. So the decisions that you make are going to be what your life is around.
Some of the risks factors for heart disease are: high blood pressure, diabetes, and having a family history of early heart disease. If you father or brother had a heart attack before age 55, or if your mom or sister had one before 65, than you are more likely to get heart disease.
REM Sleep stands for Rapid Eye Movement Sleep. This is when your eyes are constantly moving while you are sleeping which is the time we have dreams.
For instance, the website I chose to talk about heart disease risk factors is called,” National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.” I knew that it was a ligitiment website because it states that it is approved by the U. S. Department of Health & Human Services.

    2) I show that God is one my top values by praying every night. I try to have a relationship with Him and ask him to help me in everything I do. Someone could tell that I value friends by the way I treat friends and even strangers. I love my friends and try not to hurt them. I try to help them and give them advice. I even do the same for strangers, because I enjoy making friends. I show that health is important by working out often. I work out a couple times a week and try not to eat a lot of junk food. It might be hard for someone to be able to tell that education is hard for me because my grades aren't the best right now. I try to keep my grades up, but right now I have some late work. I'm hoping to have at least a 3.5 by the end of the year, though.

    3) Values are important to your health because without them, you probably wouldn't care about your well-being, education, social life, etc. It is important to have values so that you know what you want to do with your life and keep yourself on the right path.

    4) The decisions you make display your values. Most of your decisions in life are probably affected by your values. For example, if someone is against smoking, they probably aren't going to smoke cigarettes a lot or recommend it to anyone.

    5) Stress: When you are under stress (acute or chronic) your body releases two hormones: cortisol and norepinephrine. Cortisol increases blood pressure, blood glucose level, and suppresses the immune system. Cortisol can cause high blood pressure and diabetes if left untreated. Norepinphrine increases your heart rate, releases stored glucose, and increases blood low to the muscles. This hormone has similar negative side effects to cortisol. Norepinphrine can also cause pain in your lower back and muscles from the tension.

REM Sleep: REM sleep is the deepest sleep state. In this portion of sleep, we experience rapid eye movements (thus the name "REM"). This is also the time of sleep when we have dreams. We typically have 3-5 periods of REM sleep every night. The length of the period ranges from a few minutes to over an hour. About 20% of our sleep is REM sleep. You should get about 90 minutes of REM sleep a night (7-8 hours of sleep). In contrast to REM sleep, there is non-REM sleep, or NREM sleep. In this sleep state, we are very still and have normal heart and breathing rate. We are in NREM sleep most of the time we are sleeping. It is not as deep of sleep as REM sleep and therefore has less effect on us and at rejuvenating us.

    6) To tell if a website is legitimate, sometimes you can look at the bottom of the webpage for a source or something verifying it. Also, web addresses ending with ".gov" or ".edu" are normally safe, legitimate website.

  15. My top four values are academics, honoring God in everything you do and say, staying as healthy as possible and, having a free and happy life. One of the ways you can tell like to live a happy and free life is that I really like to joke around and have fun with people who I know well. Also I don’t everything as serious as it should but that can be good sometimes. In my everyday life I read my bible daily in the morning before I go to school, even though other people may not see it I do it anyways. I stay healthy in my daily life by going to the Y.M.C.A as I can. You can tell academics are important in my life because I strive hard even though I have a really bad memory and forget it sometimes.
Values are important so that you can stick to them and make right choices. If you make right choices then almost all the time they lead to something good in your life, therefore keeping you healthy. Another way values keep you healthy is that it feels like you are holding yourself accountable for your health. Values are important in decision making because as I stated earlier you hold yourself more accountable for your actions instead of having no values and just not caring.
REM sleep is where your eye moves very rapidly and is the part of your sleep where most of all your dreams occur; a total of 20% of our sleep is REM sleep, during REM sleep your brain send rapid low voltage pulses. On the other hand NREM sleep is a dreamless sleep with slow high voltage pulses in your brain. Coronary Heart disease (CHD) is where your coronary arteries get plaque built up in them and slow down the flow of oxygen rich blood from getting to your heart, plaque builds up over many years from fat, cholesterol, etc. so you may have build up and not even know it.

  16. Values are important in life, in decisions and in choices. Also values play a big role in your life. The four top values in my life would be my family, friends, honesty, and being myself. Throughout this essay I’m going to talk about how values and health are related and how they relate to life.

The decisions that I can say are my values would be I decide to tell the truth when someone asks me about something so then it wont make a big deal later. Lying can cause many problems and nothing good ever comes out of lying. Another decision I make that shows my values would be I spend time with my family on weekends and I respect them by not talking bad about them and obeying family rules. Now to answer your question about why values are important to health. Values are important to health because values guide your choices. For example it changes how you take care of your body by exorcising or eating healthier. Also values make an impact on your life and can change how you act on things.

How values and decision-making are related is that values guide your decisions. For example it changes your decisions on how you go through life. Values also can be described on different parts of the body. For example the Coronary Heart Disease. Also known as the Coronary Artery Disease. This is where plaque builds up in the heart. These are the arteries that supply oxygen blood to the heart. The plaque builds up over years and then finally ruptures or breaks. This is what causes blood clots, which turn into other problems later. Another part of the body that can be described in values are stress hormones. When your going through a lot of stress your body releases two major stress hormones. These two major stress hormones are called Cortisol and Norepinephrine. Cortisol is the hormone responsible for high blood pressure, blood sugar, and suppressing the immune system. Also when this hormone is released frequent it can be dangerous for high blood pressure. It also provides an extra boost of energy when needed. Norepinephrine is the hormone that causes the heart rate to increase. It’s also like Cortisol for helping you escape from dangerous situations.

Where I got this information was from www.nhlbi.nih.gov.com and www.naturalstressreliefguide.com. How I know these sites are scholarly is because of looking at the title or looking at links on the website. Also they might have a scholarly video on the subject your looking for on the website. I have learned a lot on values when writing this essay. I now know that values will make a great impression on my life and that it is very important to have good values now so you don’t go down the wrong road later. People usually don’t think much about values or how it’s related to health but I think that it is important for people to know about these things so they will be prepared for life. That is what I think about values and health and how there related

    ReplyDelete
  17. My top 4 values are relationships (including God, family and friends), learning, music, and character. People can tell how the preceding values are important to me due to my actions. Through being respectful to others and the people I engage with, they can see me exhibiting my value of relationship. Likewise, if they see me work on being a good student and try to acquire as much information as I can, they can point to my value of learning. Because of my continued commitment to my music, inside of school and out, people realize that I value music. Lastly, through my conscious efforts to work at and improve my character, they can see that I value it.

Values are important to your health for two reasons. Firstly, values are important to your health because they influence your decisions. Living by your values should be apparent to someone looking at your life; they should be able to determine your values by their observations. Secondly, living by them has a measurable effect on your health. Showing and taking steps to make sure your values are being exhibited affect your stress level, how well you sleep, and even protect your heart.

Values and decision-making are very closely related. The decisions that you make are based on what you hold most important, or your values. Values play a big part in what decision you end up making. The moral state of your decision, be it right or wrong, will be in line with what you value the most.

Two important stress hormones are released due to the body being affected by stress, be it acute or chronic: cortisol and norepinephrine. Cortisol increases your blood pressure, blood sugar, and curbs your immune system. It can be good, giving you some extra energy when you need it, but if released multiple times or for a prolonged amount of time, it can negatively affect you. You may contract high blood pressure or possibly even diabetes. Norepinephrine's effects are very similar to cortisol, but it does a few different things to achieve them. Instead of affecting blood pressure or sugar, it instead increases heart rate, releases stored glucose, and increases blood flow to the muscles. The last effect causes tension in the muscle area, and may cause pain in those regions.

REM sleep is named for the rapid eye movements (REMs) that occur during certain sections of sleep. Generally, humans have 3 to 5 periods of REM sleep every night, occuring at intervals of 1-2 hours. These periods are the sections of sleep where we have dreams, and, like our dreams, the length of time we spend in REM sleep can be quite variable. REM has a few defining characteristics, including quickly-moving low-voltage brain waves, irregular breathing, and involuntary movement. The opposite of REM sleep is NREM sleep. There are no dreams and all the effects are opposite of what they are during REM sleep.

I can reasonably suspect that the MedicineNet website I am linked to in reference to REM sleep is a scholarly source because in the sidebar it is listed that the Webster's New World Dictionary was authored by them. They content seemed authentic and was free from grammatical and spelling errors, indicating a knowledgeable, or at least well-educated author.

  18. My top four values are: laughter, family, quality time with the people I love, and honesty. Someone would be able to tell that these are my values because, for the most part, I do these things everyday. I love to spend time with people and family and laugh with them, and I’m honest with them. Two reasons values are important to health are: if you use them as guidelines as well, they can relieve stress. Also, they lead to decisions you will make now and later on in life. Values and decision making are related because if you’re values are in place, your decisions will be based off of them.
Two major stress hormones are Cortisol and Norepinephrine. Cortisol is the hormone that increases blood pressure, blood sugar, and suppresses the immune system. It also provides an extra boost of energy when needed. If this hormone is released frequently or a lot at different times, it can cause diabetes and blood pressure. Norepinephrine is the hormone that increases heart rate, stores glucose, and increases blood flow to muscles. This hormone can help you escape quickly from intense or dangerous situations. Its’ risks are high blood pressure and diabetes as well. Also muscle pain can occur because of tension in the muscles in your back and/or body.
REM stands for rapid eye movements. REM sleep is the portion when the eye movements, as well as low-voltage brain waves, occur. Also there is irregular breathing and heart rate, and involuntary muscle twitches, or jerks. Dream happens during REM sleep, and there are usually three to five of these periods a night. They occur every one to two hours for maybe five minutes to a full hour. 20% of a night’s sleep is REM sleep. On the other side of the spectrum, there is NREM. Non-REM, where you have no dreams. Brain waves are usually slow and high in voltage, your breathing and heart rate are slow, and your blood pressure is low. 80% of sleep is spent in NREM sleep.
You can tell if a website is correct and/or legit by looking at the actual content. It all makes sense and is grammatically correct. Also, the website names are easily recognized and are popular names, MedicineNet.com and NaturalStressRelief.com.

  19. My first top value is laughter because I love to laugh and make others laugh. My second value is Cheerfulness because being cheerful is way better than being sad and depressed. My third value is Creativity because it is great to make things in a tough situation fun by being creative. My fourth value is Honesty because I am an honest person and like others to be honest.
Someone could tell these are my values by being around me. For example I am always joking around and making people laugh, also I usually have a cheerful disposition and face. One reason why values are important to your health is some values can help you think differently and other may make you act differently. For example focus is more of a thinking value. Another reason why values are good for your health is that some values help keep you healthy. For example, one value is Health. If you have the value of laughter, laughter is good for your health.
Values and decision making are related because if your value is laughter it will help you decide to tell a joke. Also if you had a value that was health you would make good eating choices. My last example would be if you had the value of creativity you would be able to decide what you want to make or do creatively.
The two diseases I choose are coronary heart disease and Stress hormones. Coronary heart disease is when plaque builds up in your coronary arteries and blocks the blood flow to your heart. Your coronary arteries supply rich blood and oxygen to your heart. Two major stress hormones are cortisol and norpinephrine they are released when the body experiences chronic stress.
You know a website you are linked to or referencing is a scholarly or acceptable website by the web address, for example .gov .org or .edu. Also you can compare it to other websites to see if they are similar or if you get the link from a teacher. On the website http://www.naturalstressreliefguide.com I was given it by my teacher so I can trust it.

  20. 1. My top four values are God , Relationship, Integrity, and Dedication
    2. People can tell my values by the way I act. People can tell I value God because of my actions and how I act differently because of Him being in my life. People can also tell that God is a big part of my life by how I appear on the outside and how I talk. I would consider myself to be a very dedicated. Some of the many things I am dedicated to are God, family, relationships and sports. All of these things take an extreme amount of dedication. I can’t think of a day where all of these things weren’t on the top of my priority list. Bible devotions and prayer keep me dedicated to God. Living with my family takes constant dedication to each other. Relationships to my friends, teachers, and every day people that come into my life require mending, building, growing and encouraging. To be dedicated to sports requires my time, my energy, my heart and my commitment.

    3. There are many ways that my values are important to my health. The biggest way is that serving God requires a lifestyle that honors him. That includes respecting my body. The things I put into it, and the things that affect it. Eating healthy, sleeping enough, exercising my mind by being diligent in school, all these things are very important to my health; my physical health, mental health, and spiritual health. Another way my values are important to my health is having morals and living a life that honors God makes me a happier person. A person who loves life and has a positive outlook on the world we live in. Mental and spiritual health goes hand-in-hand with physical health.

    4. How are values and decision-making related? Values and decision making aren’t just related, but as a Christian, they are almost the exact same thing. You can’t make a decision that isn’t a direct outcome of your values. God tells us to live in a way that sets an example for those around us. And setting a constant example requires us to continuously keep in check the decisions we make.

    5. In the stress hormones website I learned that stress can be more than just a mild inconvenience. There are two main stress hormones called cortisol and norepinephrine that are designed to help you get through sticky situations kind of like adrenaline does. However, if you are stressed out too much and therefore experience an abundance of these hormones, you can actually suffer some pretty extreme consequences; High blood pressure and diabetes being a couple of them.
In the heart disease risk factors website I learned that there are many things in life that pose a risk for heart disease. Some of them you cannot control such as age, gender, and a family history of heart disease. However, there are many factors you can control such as your diet. Maintaining a healthy diet alone can reduce many of the risk factors for heart disease including lowering your bad cholesterol, raising your good cholesterol, and filling your body with antioxidants. Also, living an active lifestyle can help reduce your risks. Exercising is an easy way to lower your risks as well. Being consistent with these two things alone will drastically lower your risk factors for heart disease.

    6. A good way to tell that a website I visit is scholarly and acceptable is when that website is copyrighted.

  21. VALUES
    1. What are my top four values? Well my first one would have to be honesty. I hate it when people lie, cheat, and pass through life dishonestly. That is why I try so hard to be honest with people and not to cheat or lie. My next value would have to be friendship, because without friendship life would be dull and boring. Friendship teaches us good lessons that help us make better decisions. My third value encompasses love. I love most everyone I come in contact with, because to start out a relationship with someone and not love them as God does, well let's just say it can get ugly quickly. My last value would have to be joy. I like to start off my day just by being joyful. I go through my day joyful and like to keep other people happy too.
    2. People can tell that I hold true to these values when I help someone with homework I show love. When I decide not to look off a friends paper I show honesty. By just smiling throughout the day I show joy. Lastly, I show friendship by encompassing all the values I have just pointed out.
    3. I think values are important to my health because I feel when I show my values I'm a happier person and that in turn my body feels a lot healthier.
    4. Your values decide how you make decisions. Like if I hold true to honesty I'm not going to make the decision to cheat. If I hold true to being joyful I'm going to try and be happy as much as I can.
    5. Heart disease factors is the first one I chose. It says that heart disease happens when conditions or habits make it more likely for heart disease. To stop heart disease it can be as simple as taking a walk, eating a good meal, or just exercising. The next one I chose was stress hormones. These hormones when released can help you, but when you stress to much they can overpower your body leading to many diseases that you do not want.
    6. I know for one that the website I used for Heart disease factors, www.nhlbi.nih.gov, was a good website because it was for one stated an educational website and used lots of references to other links and people to back up what they were saying.

  22. My four top values are God, family, school, and health. I chose God because I am thankful for what he has done for me. He created the universe and every thing in it. I try my best to have a relationship with God by going to church and praying to him. Family is important to me because we are always there for each other and have fun times together. I would also put some of my friends in there too because they are special to me. School is one of my values because I am curious and like to learn new things. It is important for me to get good grades because it makes me feel like I’m learning something. My other value is health because I want to be healthy. I try to be healthy by eating right and being active.
I think values are important to health. One reason is if you value in being healthy then you should focus on being healthy. Another reason is if you value in being smart then you should know that you need to make healthy choices. Values and decision making are related by what you value makes you make your decision for what you believe in. If you value one thing over another you will chose in what is important to you.
Stress hormones are mainly made of two hormones Cortisol and Norepinephrine. Cortisol gives energy then it goes away, it increases your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cuts off the immune system. Norepinephrine makes your heart rate go faster and glucose gets released and makes a lot of blood flow to the muscle. It might make you have muscle and back pain. Both of these hormones give high blood pressure and diabetes is common if you have stress often. REM sleep is your skeletal muscles relax and is when you dream. It is a rapid low-voltage brain waves, uneven breathing, and muscle jerks. About 20% of your sleep is REM sleep. We have 3 to 5 stages of this each night.
I can tell that a website is safe by having a well known name websites and the website can be from colleges, governments, or hospitals. The two web-sites that I used were naturalstressreliefguide.com and medicine.net. I knew they would be safe because a nurse pointed it out to us.

  23. My values in my life. My values are to have people I have in my life, being fit and strong and, be boss at sports.
For the people that I have in my life. I am very thankful for the friends that I have and my family is the best! I want to show my values that I have to my family and so all respect and love I have for them. For my friends I want to show as much respectful as possible to them so that I will have a lot of friends and I want to joke and have lost of laughs with them and have a good time.
For me to get fit and strong. I have a good value ton be able to workout every day to get strong and be in shape. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday I work out at the school after school to get strong and fit and also for the sports that are golf and football. I also have a value to be strong and fit and not be obsesses. Since I am fit that is a good value so I don’t get any diseases.
For me to be boss at sports. A good value I have is I am pretty boss at my sports that I due witch are football and golf. I like golf better and I think I am really good at it. I like football but not as much cause it has a big risk of getting hurt. I also have a big value to live on a golf course so I can play when I want to so I can get better at it. I also have a value to play for the football team that i play for because we all so tight and friends and another value from that is that I play for a great football cause everyone on it is so talented at what they do

    ReplyDelete
  24. My top four values are Honesty, Family, Friend, and Respect. The way someone can tell how I’m honest is that in my life whenever I have lied I have felt remorse or guilt because of it and it eats at me till I tell the truth. For family well im always with them and we get along great most times and we talk most of the time but normally keep to our selves. With friends well im good with people I may be a quiet person but I enjoy my friends and my friends enjoy me we always have something to talk about. For respect I do my best to respect other toward how much of it they have earned or just how they are and who they are like your elders you respect them because they know best at our age you do it because your great friends or because they have done something to earn it. Values and decision making are related because some of you values can sometimes effect your decision that you make at a certain point in time or depending on how you feel about that person because of something they have done or how much stress you have on you that day. REM sleep are periods during your time asleep where you have rapid eye movements Dreams also occur when having REM sleep they occur at intervals of 1 to 2 hours and can be at times quite lengthy an episode of REM sleep may last 5 minutes or over an hour about 20% of sleep is REM sleep. Norepinephrine is the hormone in your body that causes your heart rate to increase simple sugar to be released into the body more, and increased blood flow to the muscles.

  25. 1: My top 4 values would be: Sports, honoring God, obedience to my family, Health.
2 Most people know I love baseball and I love everything about the game. I love exercising outside in the sun and playing with my best friends. My family can see that I give obedience to them and that I respect their opinions and usually do what’s in their best wishes.
3: Sports are a huge value to my health. I love playing any type of sport especially if they take place outside. Being outside and exercising is crucial to holding a strong and healthy life. Without controlling your health we would be run-down, overweight, sick, and simply pathetic.
4: Usually when making an important decision I try to remember what my values/morals are and make a decision that reflects them. Without values/morals our decisions could be very bad, so I like having values just for a basis to make certain decisions off of.
5: I chose heart disease and REM. First up is heart disease. Some heart disease risks are: smoking, inactivity, smoking, and lack of exercise. Now is REM from reading it seems that if you sleep 8 hours per night 90 minutes of those 8 hours is spent in REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movements and this is the stage in sleeping where dreams occur. Even if it’s only for 20% of dreaming that’s probably the high point sleeping for me personally.
6: I knew the link was good for information because it had .gov at the end which means it’s a government website so I assume it’s legit. And you wanted us to use the information from there so I followed directions. It didn’t look sketchy so I assume it was a trustworthy, and useful site.

  26. 1. My top 4 values would probably have to be Honesty, Integrity,
Loyalty, and Friends and Family. I chose those values because
Honesty is very important if you want to have a good relationship with
anyone. Integrity kind of falls under the same category but if
you have no integrity then thats not good at all. Loyalty is very key
because without Loyalty you will never be trusted and no one will
want to hang out with you at all. Friends and Family is a big part of my life
and I hope it stays like that too.

    2. Well in my life I like to hang out with friends quite a bit
and I like spending time with my family because they're
just fun to be around. I'm very loyal and most of my friends should
know that because I don't go around gossiping about them at all.
Honesty is big to because I don't like it when people lie to me
so why should I lie to anyone else if I don't like it.

    3. 2 reasons values are important to my health is that if you don't
have a lot of family time or friend time you begin to feel lonely
and you finely get so lonely that you get depressed and you
get desperate. Honesty is important because if you get in a
habit of lying to much, you will hurt yourself morally and that
will not be healthy for you either.

    4. Values and decision-making are quite close. Whatever you decide
is reflecting on your values. Your not going to do somethig that your
values do not reflect or are. If you have honesty you shouldn't be
lying all the time and going behind peoples back and saying rude things

    5. Rem sleep is where you go to sleep and your eyes are constantly moving.
It can go on for 5 minutes to an hour at just one time. This is not good
because your brain is working to hard and then your working hard every
day. Coronary Heart Disease is where plaque builds up in the areteries and
it blocks blood from getting to the heart.

    6. Like the Rem Sleep website you dont know if that is safe.
It says it a doctors website but you never know if someone just made
it up to be funny or really are trying to inform you about it. To me the
website looks perfectly fine and I think its a fine website but still will never know.
This is my essay about Values.

  27. My four top values are that I value my friends and family. I also value my church and I value my brother.

By the way I hang out with my friends and how much time spend with my family. Also by the way i go to church events and how much i like to spend with my youth groups. I also love to go to friends houses and playing cards with them.

Two reasons values are important because if you want your social health to be good you need to hang out with your friends. Going to Church helps your mental health. it also helps your spiritual health. I value my brother because he pushes me past my limits in my physical health.

Values and decision making are related because your values decide what kind of decision you make towards others and your family. they also relate because if u dont have values you dont know how handle a situation.

REM sleep stands for Rapid Eye Movement sleep. This happens about three to five times a night and it takes place about ninety minutes each night. irregular breathing and muscle jerks may occur. On the other hand, Cardiovascular Risk is just a word for saying heart disease risk. you can’t control being older or your race, but all of these things can go against you in your possibility of having a heart attack. you can control whether you smoke, are over-weight. The easiest way to make sure you keep your heart healthy is to exercise regularly, and stay away from drugs and alcohol.

The websites I used were reliable because I realized that their names could be from knowledgeable people wrote them.

  28. My top four values are God, my family, friends, and staying true to myself. I value God because he has guided me through so many hard trials. Reading the bible and having a personal relationship with God has given me so many answers to the hard questions we find ourselves unable to answer on our own. I don’t want to imagine my life without God in it. I value my family because even though it is dysfunctional and has its problem they are there for me. I try to always be honest and open with them. I value my friends because they make my life brighter every single day. I am honest with them even when I have to tell them something difficult. I value their opinion and what they think about my actions and decisions. I also value staying true to myself because if I cannot be true to myself then how can I be true to anyone else? I have to always be honest with myself even when I want to pretend everything is a certain way. Overall these values give me the most joy in life.

People can see God is valued in my life by my actions. I am part of the worship at Cascade Christian High school and I also participate in many bible class conversations. I love going to chapel and hearing about God. They can see I value my family by how I am always there to help my family. I put them first even if I am mad at them I will still help them. My siblings often times make me upset and minutes later will ask me for advice. I give them advice even though I am upset with them. I love all my family members and I am always trying to put them before myself. I show my friends they are valued by treating them with respect and love. I try to always listen to what they have to say and take it into account. If they say my actions are not right then I will try and change how I act so I can be a better person and a better friend. Lastly people can see I value being true to myself because I never lie to myself by saying everything I okay when it’s not. I don’t try and lie to others about my life and how I feel. If something is wrong or bothering me I will say so.

Two reasons values are important to me is they keep me on the right path and help me make good decisions in life. If my decisions are not in life with God then I try and change them. If my decisions take me off the right path my friends and family will tell me and I will try and change that. As I get older my values change but I have always valued my family and friends. Values are also important to your health because without values we would go and run around doing whatever we wanted whenever we wanted. We would have no control and in my life I need control and rules. I value being true to myself because it keeps me honest with everyone else around me and helps me stay on a good path God would approve of.

Values tie into decision-making because what you value will affect your decisions. I value my family and friends therefor many of my decisions will benefit them. I will not make a decision that hurts my family and friends intentionally. Also I will not make a decision going against God. Such as doing drugs and drinking because I want to have a good and pure relationship with my Savior. My decisions are also affected by myself value. I value being honest with myself because it makes my decisions easier.

REM sleep is when you dream. It occurs due to rapid eye movement. REM sleep can last from five minutes to an hour long. NREM stands for non-REM sleep. This means we don’t have any dreams and slow and of high voltage brain waves. REM is rapid, low-voltage brain waves. Coronary heart disease, also called coronary artery disease, is when plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries. This build up happens over many years. This disease limits the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your heart. Coronary heart disease can cause pain and discomfort.

1.) My top four values are: my faith. I value the blessing of having Jesus Christ in my life as I walk through it day by day, and strive to obey and trust in Him always; love. Love is a large and important factor in my life because it is always needed whether that is for you or to give to others. Love is definitely a healthy feeling and emotion. It is provided by God, family, friends, even a stranger can show you love and random acts of kindness! Laughter is another important value to me because I absolutely adore laughing! I enjoy the feeling it gives me and the mood(s) it can instantly put me in. I thrive off of the joy of making other people smile and laugh; it brings me so much happiness and satisfaction. I never want to give up the precious gift of laughter; family and friends are very important because they are who teach you to be the person you are today. My mom is my role model and she always provided great advice and so much love. My family has always taught my sister and me to say “please” and “thank you,” and to be kind and courteous. My friends are there to provide a laugh for me every day and to listen to me when I need to vent my feelings; and I value my future. I think about my future a lot, and decisions I make today can and will affect my future. I highly value my reputation and will maintain to keep it in tact for a successful future ahead of me.

2.) People can tell what my values are by my words and actions of everyday life. My friends look at me as a bright, hilarious friend, who loves to have a good laugh every now and then. People tell me this, and I just smile and say thank you (just as my parents taught me)! They know I plan to be a successful woman when I am older and want to live my life devoted to Christ.

3.) Two reasons values are important for your health are: they create a balance of good feeling, exercise (mentally and even physically), and a lack of laziness. Not having goals or values could cause a person to become lackadaisical and just move on as the day moves on.

4.) Values and decision-making are related because with every value you have, there will be decisions you will have to make. For example, I value my faith. This highly viewed value is always coming across oncoming decisions for me to make. For instance, I may choose to hang out with a group of friends on a weekend, but they decide it would be fun to drink and attempt to do drugs. I know as a Christian, I am too young to be drinking and/or consuming drugs in the first place considering I am only fifteen, and that if they are going to be under the influence and pressure me into joining them, I should not attend their get together, but choose to do something more productive on a Friday night. Either choice with affect me in different ways. I know instantly that staying at home and watching a movie in this case would be a much better decision.

  33. Values

The dictionary.com definition of value is 1] the desirability of a thing, often in respect of some property such as usefulness or exchangeability; worth, merit, or importance. To find the top four values in one’s life takes some inward looking and thinking. You have to know yourself and who you are. Since there is no real guidelines to what a value could be you kind of just have to make them up. I think one’s values come from one of two things. Either your conscience, what you think you should do or your desire, what you would want yourself to do. A lot of times people think of themselves differently then what they actually are so what I think we should do is look at our actions. The first value I would say for myself would be Christian. Not only would I like for people to think of me as a good person, but I know it is the right thing to do. For my second value I would say being a successful person especially in sports. That is what I spend a lot of my time doing, and I get upset when I am unsuccessful. My third value would probably be relationships such as family and friends. Family is something that is important to me. The fourth value for me is taking value in myself and in others. Attempting to do this keeps me on track and in the direction I want to go. Question number two was answered mostly on accident during number one. Number three] Two reasons why values are important to your health are: your values in a way determine your actions which determine your health and if you know your values you will be a more confident person because you won’t question who you are.

  34. 1. The top value in my life is God. The second value in my life is my family. The third value in my life is my health. The fourth value in my life is sports.
    2. A way that someone can tell that these are my top four values in my life is by the way I act and live. Every day I try to I try to read the bible and pray. Also every day I spend time with my family. I am always keeping myself healthy by brushing my teeth every day, taking showers every day, and being active and playing sports every day.
    3. Two reasons why values are important to our health is because values keep us organized, and if we are not organized we might become stressed which is not very healthy. The second reason why values are important for our health is good values like exercising keep us healthy and in shape for other stuff.
    4. Values and decision making are related because you make a decision what your values are. Values and decision making are also related because values can be very important in your life, because without values your life might be a mess. Decision making is also very important because decision may make your life end up really good but a bad decision may also make your life really bad.
    5. The two concepts that I am choosing is REM sleep and Coronary heart disease. During REM sleep, rapid eye movements occur breathing becomes irregular blood pressure get higher, and there is loss of muscle tone. Coronary Heart disease occurs when fatty deposits called plaque buildup inside the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries wrap around the heart and give it with blood and oxygen. When plaque builds up it narrows the arteries and reduces the amount of blood that gets to your heart. This can cause serious problems like a heart attack.
    6. A way that you can know that it is a good and real website to us is you see where the info on the website comes from like on emedicinehealth it comes from all different doctors and other smart people.

  35. 1. My top four values are my Christian faith, family, friends and sports. I value my Christian faith because it’s good for my health to keep a strong relationship with God and live my daily live by the values He gives me. Family is a strong value of mine because my entire family is there for me when I need each of them. The relationship with my friends is an important part of my life because I count on them when I am feeling down. Sports gives me a great joy to participate and the exercise I value for my body.
    2. My Christian faith is evident in the way I act around people especially those who are not Christians. Others can tell my family values because of the way we are always together during hardships and even the good times. I feel like I am a good friend to others and that is evident in the trust they put in me. I am 100% committed to the sports I play and the value I put into them shows in my sportsmanship and dedication to success.
    3. The two reasons my personal values are important to my health are: they help keep me both mentally and physically prepared for any situation that comes at me.
    4. My decisions are related to my values by the way I respond to things in my life because if my values were bad, I think I would make more bad decisions.
    5. Stress hormones can be more controlled by learning to manage stress more and the more you manage your stress the more likely you are to be healthier. The risk of heart disease is greatly reduced by not smoking, controlling your blood pressure, controlling your weight and being active. These are things that we can control that are some other factors that we cannot control like male/female.
    6. By reviewing the certifications listed at the bottom of each website we viewed there were certifications of medically trusted websites for proof.

  36. 1.My top four values in life are being as much of a leader for my Lord as possible, using my God given talents in sport to my full potential, having a good family relationship, and last keeping my grades up in school.

    2. My main value in life is being a leader for my Lord, it is a tough one to follow but I put in alot of time toward it. By this i try to show everyone i am a good christian by my apropriate actions in everything i do. For using my God given ability i work hard in wrestling and stand out from others in what i accomplish in the sport. With my family i try to do as many things while i can and enjoy everything that goes on. In school to show this as a value I work myself dilligently getting the best grades I can recieve.

    3. Values keep my body healthy for one because I am always so busy that i'm preoccupied making me unable to get myself into bad stuff which could hurt me. Another reason is since I have values I feel there is always a reason to keep doing things in life. This allows me to believe my life is worth living.

    4. With vlaues it creates me to think upon what decision i will making before i make it. This usually will help me make the better decisions. Without values usually you would not care what decision is made creating the likely choice of making the wrong one.

    5. I chose risk factors for heart disease and REM sleep. Heart disease has some factors that can be controlled but there are vital ones which cannot. 1.2 million heart attacks happen because of coronary heart disease and sadly more than fourty percent of those heart attacks are fatal. Over 7 million United states citizens have had a heart attack in their lifetime. There are tons of risks for heart attacks some are controllable others are uncontrollable. A few uncontrollable heart attacks are caused by old age, male gender, the type of race, and coming from a family who has had a history of heart attacks. Some of the controllable ones are from smoking, bad or good cholesteral, phyisical inactivity, and obesity. Now REM sleep happens about 3 to 5 times per night. They happen in about 1 to 2 hours per session. About 20 percent of our sleep is REM. When our body is in REM sleep our brain creates low voltage rapid brain waves, while our breathing is irregular and involuntary muscle jerks occur.

  37. 1. My top four values are God, my family and friends, happiness and fitness.
    2. I value my relationship with God so I try to do devotions, pray a lot and make good choices every day. I value my family and friends so I spend time with them and respect them. I value happiness because I think it is important to be happy and I try not to make other people unhappy. And I value fitness so I like exercise and focus on stuff like that.
    3. Values are important to your health because they can help you make decisions that can affect your health. They are also important to your health because if you do not have any values, then you might not care about your health.
    4. Coronary heart disease is when plaque builds up in your coronary arteries, which supply blood with a lot of oxygen to your heart. The plaque builds up over time and stops the blood that is filled with oxygen from flowing to your heart, which can cause a heart attack.
Stress hormones are “responsible for increased blood pressures, blood sugar and suppressing the immune system”. If the stress hormone is released often, or if it released for a long time, the effects of it can be very dangerous. Diabetes can also be caused by high blood pressure.
    5. Values and decision making are related because your values help you make decisions. If you have good values then you will probably not make bad decisions, but you will make decisions that reflect your values. If you have bad values, then some decisions will not matter to you even if they are important.
    6. You know that a website you are referencing is acceptable usually if it is recommended by a teacher, or if it is a government website.

    Per.3 2/8/12 Values
My first value that is important to me is staying in shape. Recently I had a high ankle sprain a low ankle sprain tore almost all the way through two of the three tendons going to my ankle and a tibia fracture. Also the week before I did this I had something weird happen to my quad on the same leg. It was might have been tore or a contusion or a pull or a little of all three. So during this time I couldn’t really run at all. So in affect to that I got out of shape and am still in the process of getting back into shape.
My second value is honesty. No one likes someone who is constantly making up stories. If someone is to say they are going to do something they had better do it. There is a line between messing around with your friends and stretching the truth a little bit and then explaining to them later you were exaggerating and telling a strait up lie. If your parents ask you if you did something and you lie and say yes, it gets you into a bigger mess. But if you just said you didn’t do it with no hesitation and tell them you will do it right then I found it works way better.
My third and forth reasons go hand in hand. Don’t get behind and be diligent. This will help you in life and school and sports or anything in that matter. If you want good grades for school don’t get behind be diligent and do your homework and get it in on time. If you want to be great in sports go to your workout and go all out so you don’t get behind and stay ahead of everyone else.
Someone can tell these are my main values if they watched me for one day. I wake up, go to school, do agilities and lift, do more school, turn in some papers, do more school, go pick up my bro, go to the YMCA, go home, do home work. I told my dad this is what I will do every day of the week so I may drive and I have.
Two reasons values are important for health, are to keep your priorities strait and you healthy. Values help with your decisions, because before you make a decision your consents will check your priorities which will effect what decision you make. Cortisol and norepinephrine are both hormones that make blood pump faster, which is stress which in some cases gives you energy. REM sleep happens to all of us at least a few times a night weather we know it or not. Most of the time this occurs during dreams. You can tell a website is legit by either looking it up or look at where they got their information and double check it.

  39. I constantly analyze my values, and question wether they are right or not. I never seem to be able to come to a concrete solution, but I guess my values are unique and are neither right or wrong. My top four values are music, imagination, reputation, and discernment. I display my valuing of music by listening, playing, and appreciating music constantly. Music is a gateway to let feelings, knowledge, and perspective out, and a way for the same to come in. I don’t usually publicly display my imagination, because it’s all in my head. I used to draw all the time and let my imagination run free, but I don’t really do that anymore. I am constantly consumed by my own thoughts. The value that most people misunderstand about me is my reputation. I really don’t like to hurt people and I don’t like to make people think I am horrible, so I just keep to myself and try to stay out of everyone’s way. I highly value my discernment because I like knowing what people think and feel, and what their intentions are. It feels good to be a step ahead of a lot of people, and I enjoy analyzing people’s lives and personality.(I am not trying to be creepy or judgemental)
It is important to live with a purpose and to know who you are. Living a motivated life has benefits to your health, as long as those motivations aren’t hurting you. Living like this will decrease stress hormones and will keep you positive. These are important for a healthy mind. Being positive will also give you more energy, which will help you stay physically fit.
Values greatly affect your decision making. If you value one thing over another, you will likely decide on a choice related to that value. If you value pain then you will cause pain. If you value honesty, you will usually be honest. That’s how it works.
The two hyper links I chose were REM sleep, and stress hormones. REM stands for rapid eye movement, and is a period of sleep when you dream. You have REM sleep usually 20% of your sleeping time. There are two major stress hormones. One hormone is Cortisol. This can cause high blood pressure and diabetes, if it is released too much, too often. Another hormone is called Norepinephrine. It has the same affects as Cortisol, with additional back and muscle pain.
You never know for sure if a website has accurate information, but there are good signs that can show you it might be. If the site looks professionally organized, and doesn’t have mistakes in its text, then it is probably scholarly. Usually sites that give out this kind of information are not biased, which is a good sign of authenticity. I am sure that the site on REM sleep is accurate, because I have researched the topic myself in the past. The information seems to match up with other information on other sites. It also is professionally organized.

  40. 1. Well honestly my top four values would have to be first, God and his word. Second is my relationship I have with my family. Third, is the relationships and friendships I have with my friends. Lastly, my fourth value is probably for me to excel in sports and school.
    2. Well a way that I’ve proved those values are really my values to others and myself is first of all my first value is for me having a good relationship with God and his word. The only way I know how to do that is lead by example, I mean I’ve brought kids to Christ who didn’t go to our school a couple times and the only way you can get closer in Gods word is to read it and I try to read it as much as I can, every night. My relationship with my family part is kind of hard for me being that my parents are split and all and my brothers in college out of state, but I try my best to remain the peace maker and try for everybody to agree and not fight all the time. Thirdly my friends, I have some good friends and I’ve built good relationships with a good few and I mean we are always there for each other know matter what and I think that what a good friend is. Someone always being there in the good and bad times. Lastly sports and school is one of my values that I probably struggle with the most. That one some people might not agree with me but school and sports is very important to me and I’ve been really trying to bring up all my grades and I think its showing in my actions so far.
    3. Well two reasons why values are important to your health is that a value of yours might be sports and you need to stay fit if you want to play sports. The second one is that a value stating you want to honor God means that you need to keep healthy the body he blessed you with.
    4. The reason why I believe values and decision making are related is because whatever your values are if you make the wrong decisions or decisions that contradict your values the those aren’t really your values.
    5. The first website I visited was REM sleep, which stood for rapid eye movement sleep. This was talking about how this happens while your asleep and for about 90 min a night. While this is taking effect our bodies are different. For example, you don’t breath regularly and you brain waves have a lower voltage. The second thing I looked at is the stress hormones one and all that is, is just how your body releases something called stress hormones when your under a lot of stress and what its supposed to do is relieve the stress.
    6. The way you know if pretty much websites are legit and are actually true, all I do is just look at what group its made by or company and normally if those are really and truthful groups then you should be fine receiving your information there.

  41. I could probably list values of mine all day long, but I do have a few that are extra important to me. One of them is making good decisions. Making the right or wrong decision could make or break your life, or at least make a difference. Another one of my values is trust. It is important to gain someone else’s trust or for you to be able to trust in someone. You may not think you need their trust right now but you may need it later in life. Possibly my most important value is fun. With everything I do I try to find something fun about it. Sometimes it is easy and sometimes it is very hard. The last value I am going to share is integrity. Doing the right thing even when no one is watching is sometimes very hard. But I feel good if I do it so that is what drives me to try and do that.
Some of my values may be hard for others to see, like integrity because part of it is doing the right thing when no one is watching. But there are some that people should see if I actually do them. One of them being trust. I try to be kind to everyone and not make enemies so that I can gain there trust. You never know when you will need someone you can rely on.
Values can be important to your health in many ways. One of them is your mental health or in other words how you think of yourself. If you have enough integrity to do the right thing at all times then you will think highly of yourself and even though others may not know how much of a role model you are, you will. Another way values are important to your health is through trust. When you have someone’s trust you are most likely friends to some degree. And when you have friends you are generally happier which, again, helps with mental health.
Your values can effect what decisions you make. If you make good values early on in life you are likely to follow them and make good decisions later on in life. An example is if you make one of your values health than it will not be easy for someone to get you to start smoking because it is bad for your health and you want to stay healthy.
There are 2 major stress hormones that are released when you are stressed. Cortisol is one of them and this one affects your blood pressure and makes you have a bad immune system. The other hormone is Norepinephrine, which increases heart rate and increases blood flow to your muscles. REM sleep is the time in your sleep that dreams occur. Also you have rapid eye movements during this time. About 20% of your time sleeping is spent in REM sleep. You also have involuntary muscle jerks and irregular breathing and heart rate.
One of the ways I figure out if a website is credible is its title. If the title seems like something someone made up for a school project or for fun I typically try to avoid it. Another way is if the website has info on many things or just one specific topic. If there is info on a broad topic it seems to me that it has better info. An example is the link I used for info on REM sleep. The website was named Medterms.com. It had info on many medical terms. Which, to me, made it more credible.

  42. My top four values are my relationship with Jesus Christ, relationship with friends, my family and integrity. The ways in my life I show that these are my values are I am always trying to be the best example of Christ I can be by reading the stories of Jesus and when I get put in a bad situation, I think “What would Jesus do?” and act accordingly. I also always apologize to people when I do something is shouldn’t have done to them. Two of the many reasons value is important to our health, is one, it gives us something to live for so we have a direction to go to in our lives. A second reason is it gives us a sort of guidelines in our lives to follow. Our values and decision making are related because we will make different choices based on our decisions. An example is one of my values is integrity, so I will try to be honest as much as humanly possible. REM sleep is when we dream. We go into REM sleep in intervals of one to two hours. They vary in length and can be a few minutes up to an hour or above. When sleeping, on 20% of it is REM sleep. If you sleep 10 hours, about 2 hours it will be REM sleep. Cardiovascular risk is how prone you are to having a heart attack. While there are many factors that contribute to heart disease, you can greatly lower your risk by taking precautions. Some of the ways to prevent heart disease are not smoking, keeping a stable blood pressure, being physically active, and having controlled stress and anger. You can know if it is reliable by where they get their information from. For Webmd.com, which has the information on heart disease, they get their information from doctors and medical experts.

  43. 1. My four values are family, positive attitude, best, and consideration.
    2. Family - I’m living away from my family right now so I can feel that they are very important to me. My parents are very wise people so I can tell them my problem in US and they tell me their thoughts. Positive attitude – My biggest concern in my life. It helps me to see the situation to the better ways. The best – I do my best every moment. It’s my motto. If I do my best, the result is absolutely best. Consideration – We are living with many different people. We have to consider about other people not only ourselves.
    3. The first reason is that if I think about the problem to positive way, it helps me to get less stress. Stress is very not good for health. It makes me feel depressed.
The second reason is the values help me to think that I have a purpose. If I don’t’ have any purpose, I don’t want to do anything and also feel depressed. Because it feels like I’m useless person. Happiness can make everything better even health.
    4. If I have values, I can make a decision to right way. Of course every person has different values but the purpose of having values is same. For example, one of my values is positive attitude. Thinking positive way helps me to see the situation better. It will help me to decide something to better way.
    5. Stress hormones – There are two basic kinds of stress hormones. One is Cortisol. It makes us to gain weight because of the stress. Norepinephrine makes our hearts beat faster and it causes high blood pressure.
REM sleep - When we sleep, our bodies are sleeping but the brain is not sleeping. So our eyes are keep moving around.

  44. My top four values are Jesus, family, love, and joy. Jesus is my King and he saved me by dying on the cross. He protects me, heals me, and guides my life. I love my family. They are always there for me and I want to be there for them. Though we are apart we love each other very much! I value love because Jesus loves me. I need to love others because of this. Lastly, I value joy because I shine Jesus’ light through joy. I love to smile, laugh, and shine to others.
People can understand my values by the way I act. I show Jesus by praying and worshipping Him. I always go to Him before making decisions. I demonstrate my value of family by speaking highly of them. I also like to hang out in public. I show love to others by being kind and having grace. Love is more than what they show on T.V. I am joyful and show this by smiling and laughing. I like to make others laugh and cheer them up when they are sad.
Values are important to your health because it is what you live by. If one of your values is disrespect, people might not like you and you can become sad. Values can also keep you going. Values also can help you make good choices. You can choose not to fall under pressure or drinking all night long.
Values and decision making are related because what you value affects your decisions. If you tend to have good values then you will probably make good decisions. Also if you are not strong in your values then your choices can be influenced by others. God helps us make good decisions. Then, God helps us with our values and staying strong in him.
When you become very stress two hormones are released, cortisol and neropinephrine. These both increase blood pressure, released for long periods of time, and give you energy to stop being stressed. With stress you may not eat right, sleep well, and you muscles may become tense. REM sleep is sleeping with rapid eye movements. About 20% of time you sleep is REM sleep and dreams usually occur in this time. During REM sleep you may have involuntary muscle jerks or increased heart rate.
The websites are acceptable because of the information. The website I visited also had other links about a healthy body. The websites were copy righted too. These sites are acceptable because of appearance. They looked true and right to follow.

  45. My top four values are Faith, Honest, Exploration and Determination. Following and obeying God’s Word is what guides my life. Honesty is very important to me and I expect the same from others. People close to me know this to be true. Exploration is one of my most important values because I always want to see more of God’s creations. I love to see things that are different from my everyday life. My last value is determination. When I put my mind on something I’m always prone to completing it the best possible way.

People close to me know these things are important to my life. Everyday I make a conscious effort to put God first and in my daily activities to trust in Him. I always try to be open and honest to people to show them who I am. I’m always thinking about the future and how I can help make a difference to others.

I think values are important to your health because if you live your life according to God’s plan you can avoid a lot of trouble and stay on the road that God has planned for you. I also think that your values act towards your health by your actions toward others and yourself.

Your values guide your decisions that you make everyday and how you live your life. If you make your decisions and find yourself in bad situations chances are you’re not following your own values. This is why values play an important part in our lives because it keeps the bar high on how we should live and respect others.

REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement Sleep) is when a person is asleep and dreaming with elaborate storylines that last for 5 minutes to an hour. During REM sleep, the person asleep usually experiences 4-5 periods of REM until the person awakens. Also, during the REM sleep one breathes faster and has a higher heart rate. The person in REM normally twitches in the feet, hands or eyes. After REM sleep the person may forget the dream and may experience hallucinations when not fully concentrated.

Stress hormones are your body’s natural defense mechanism against threatening situations. People who experience high stress levels can end up having major health problems. Your body has a natural defense mechanism that kicks in during dangerous or threatening situations that ultimately lead to high levels of stress. This is usually caused by an adrenaline rush. Long-term affects of stress can cause heart disease, depression, digestive problems, obesity and worsening skin conditions.

The website that I used for stress hormones is an acceptable website because it is for medical professionals and the Mayo Foundation for medical education and research is very reputable.

  46. One of my top 4 values is responsibility because you can’t blame other people for your own actions. My second most important value is truthfulness because if you’re not trustworthy you can’t build a strong foundation on lies. If you do it will fall apart faster than you thought. Another one of my values is individuality. If you are just following other people you’re basically living a lie. You have to be yourself not someone else. My last value is hospitality. Someone doesn’t have hospitality if you get bullied they mite just stand there and laugh at you too! Last minute they were your friend now your enemy. There are many more values that I have. These are just some of them.
How you can tell what my top 4 values are is by how I act. I may not use all of my values in every situation. As we all know we make mistakes. How you can tell I’m responsible for my actions is with my homework. I turn it in on time, my time and work I have to do around the house. How you can tell I value truthfulness is by who I pick as friends. I definitely value individuality because I used to not be myself especially at school. I was super shy. Didn’t talk to any one, but now I’m not that way. Also, you feel way better being yourself. Lastly, hospitality I try not to be mean, have patience and help people in need. For instance, I help out at a South Sound Dream Center, Feed My Starving Children and much more.

Two reasons why values are important to your health are because if you don’t have values you probably won’t think twice before you do/say something. Also you might not have a standard for a husband/wife so when you get married you could end up finding out you hate that person, same with friends. I think that you base all/most of your decisions on your values so you want to make sure you’re choosing good wholesome values to follow.
Getting older increases your risk of damaged arteries and weakening heart muscle. Men are more at risk of heart disease than women. If a family member had any troubles with this especially at a younger age you’re more at risk than others. If you smoke then nicotine from the cigarette constricts your blood vessels. Heart disease is more common in smokers than non-smokers. Also, if you are overweight you have a higher risk of heart failure or diseases.
REM sleep disorder stands for rapid eye movement. Caused by loss of normal muscle. This involves abnormal sleep movement while dreaming. They actually try to do the stuff their dreaming in real life.
I know it was a good site because it was organized by a clinic and staff of the clinic. Made by doctors and RN for the public to use to answer their questions about diseases or disorders.

  47. 1. My top values are integrity, family, trust, and freedom. Integrity is extremely important to me because I want a friend who is the same to my face as they are behind my back. I want them to be doing the right thing even when I am not around them. Family is definitely important to me because no matter what, they are the only ones I will always be able to turn to. They love me unconditionally no matter what. Trust is also very key because trust is a big part of a relationships foundation. You need to be able to trust the person you love or are friends with. Freedom is also huge because my brother is in the military and I appreciate all who serve.
    2. People can tell my values by the way I act. I do my best to be the friend I would want to have. I don’t talk behind peoples’ backs because it irritates me when they do it to me. Next, I spend a lot of time with my family, and we are really close to each other. They would know trust is a big one because I give every one total trust until they prove to me they don’t deserve it. Finally, freedom.. I love anyone and every one who serves. They don’t have to, but I definitely appreciate what they do to make their family and friends back home happy and safe.
    3. Values are important to your health because they give you a strong foundation. They help you make decisions that need to be made, can change what you believe in, and also make you who you are. They can get you through tough times, and help you resolve problems.
    4. The values that you have, like I said in #3, lead to the decisions that you make. The way that you carry out your life, and also how you live in general.
    5. Stress hormones are hormones released when the body is under great amounts of stress and some of the hormones released are cortisol, GH, and norepinephrine. Some heart disease risk factors are high blood pressure and cholesterol, being over weight and smoking.
    6. I visited www.nhlbi.nih.gov which is a government website so I knew that it was a legit source.
