Fitness Finesse

Fitness is not fun for me.

It is a chore.

A bill that must be paid.

An obligation to my body

. . . And it is torture.

Okay, well that is not entirely true.

Truly, everything I just wrote was a vast exaggeration, and intended only to catch your attention. But for some people, and maybe some of you-those are not exaggerations at all.

It seems that most of America has forgotten to value fitness and exercise- choosing instead Big Macs and Biggest Loser on the television. We enjoy watching Bob, Jillian and Dolvet punish those people who have let their weight escape control, without realizing that our sedentary lifestyles are creeping dangerously close to those of the Biggest Loser contestants.

We fail to realize the weight (literally) of the issue.

According to an article on the University of Michigan’s website, “The percentage of teens who are overweight has more than tripled in the past twenty years”.  Now, according to that same website, 4.7 MILLION youths age 6-17 are “severely overweight”.

A large (again, pun intended) part of the issue is our sedentary lifestyles, filled with television, video games and technology. Our failure to be fit is causing our bodies to fail. Obesity carries with it several devastating health risks, as seen in the chart below.

Although it is a drastically important reason to stay fit, often times we fall into the thinking that avoiding obesity is the only reason to be fit. We compare our body weight to those around us, on television or at Walmart, and then decide whether we need to “workout to lose weight”.  When we decide those around us weigh more than us, we may use it as an excuse not to be active.

But the benefits of exercise are endless. Starting with the maintenance of weight, the benefits of exercise just continue with the release of endorphins, the lowering of blood pressure and the increase to our “good” cholesterol.

There are too many more to list, but the important thing to remember is that everyone, whether the appropriate weight or not, needs to be physically active for good health.

The first step is to start. Find out where you are, and figure out how to improve. If you are a couch potato, time to walk.

An athlete?

Time to become elite.

The important thing with fitness is to find what you love, what you can sustain, and what you can do everyday to fight for your fitness.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1.     Who is the man in the first video? What does he say the “most pressing” issue facing America is?
How many people did this issue kill in a year? What does the video say about this generation of
      American children?

2.    Click on the link “too many more to list”. Name some benefits of exercise that I have not talked about. What benefits are there for YOU in exercising?

3. MAKE SURE TO ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS....

-What is the “Intervention” or “treatment” that the Dr. is talking about in the second video?
- What specifically does the Dr. say the BEST thing you can do for your health is?
- In the bar graph of “attributable factors”, which was the strongest predictor of death in a population?
-What are the three things to consider about the “dose”?
-How much were women’s heart disease rates decreased by the “treatment”?
-How much TV does the average American adult spend watching tv?
-Why is the Dr.’s talk called, “23 ½ hours?”

4. Take the quiz on the link "First step", PRINT YOUR RESULTS.  Then, click, "Go to useful links". Click on one of the recommended links and talk about what you learned.

5. Take the quiz on the link, "Figure out where you are". What was your score? What could you do to become more active or change your lifestyle to increase your score?

6. Finally, click on, "figure out" link. Take the physical fitness test. (All 4 sections). Record your results. Write a plan to improve those results. How will you do it?

7. In all bold it says, "What you can sustain", in regards to exercise. What do I mean by what you can sustain? Why is it important?

    1. Dr. Richard Carmona is the person talking about how obesity is the most pressing issue in America. It kills more than 112,000 people every year. They are saying that obesity is rising, and that back in say, 1995, there were way less overweight people than there are today.
    2. Exercise lets us fight off and prevent diseases, as well as better sleep. For me, exercise makes me feel good. Not during, but after exercise you get that feeling of being refreshed.
    3. Exercise shows the best treatment of many problems. The best thing you can do for your health is exercise 30 minutes a day. Lack of exercise is the biggest cause of preventable death. Now, when you do exercise, you should think, “How much?” “How often?” and “How intense?”. Fifty percent of heart problems decreased in women with exercise. The average American spends 5 hours in front of the TV! I think the presentation is called “23 ½ hours” because that’s the amount of time every day you can sit or sleep. The title makes exercise seem like a very quick activity.
    4. I clicked on “How to adopt an active lifestyle.” One thing I learned is that you can exercise with friends, which makes you want to exercise more often. Dancing is a fun way to exercise, and I can’t say I disagree! Trying out a new sport could work too.
    5. I got 18 points, which means I’m pretty good with fitness. I could add more types of exercise to my routine to make it better. I do plan on doing yoga once tennis is over, because I don’t have enough time currently.
    6. Before my walk, my pulse was 60 bpm. After, my heart rate was 72 bpm. I could do 20 pushups without taking a break, though the last four or five were a bit slower. The best I could reach was 97 centimeters. My waist is 32 ½ inches around, and my BMI is 25.1. To improve these results, I could eat healthier and do pushups every day. I could exercise more, too. Doing yoga would increase my flexibility.
    7. “What you can sustain” means something you could do your whole life. You could do tennis or swimming your whole life, but not football. Keeping up on exercise is vital to remain healthy your whole life.

    1) The man in the first video is, Dr. Richard Carmona U.S Surgeon General. He says the most pressing issue we have in America is obesity. In one year obesity killed 112,000 people. The video says that “We may be producing a generation of children whose life expectancy may be less than our own.”
    2) A few examples of why it s good to exercise are: improve mood, boost energy, better sleep, put a spark back in your sex life, exercise is fun! The benefits I get from exercise are taking my shirt off in front of girls when its hot out, getting a lot of complements, and being happy when I look in a mirror.
    3) The treatment that the doctor talks about is exercise! The doctor says that the best thing you can do for your health is spend half an hour to an hour being active. The strongest predictor of death in a population is low fitness. Three thing to consider about the “dose” are how much, how often and how intense. Women’s heart disease rates went down almost 50%. The average American adult watches about five hours per day. It is called 23.5 hours because he asks us if we could limit our sitting or sleeping to just 23.5 hours a day.
    4) I read about over coming mental barriers and as I read about this I realized the only thing that keeps me from working out all the time is school and homework.
    5) On the quiz I scored 33 points. What I can do to improve my points is not sit at school in a desk all day long every single day for eight hours over and over again.
    6) My results for the fitness tests are 96bpm, 75 push ups, 16 inches on flexibility, a 31 inch waist and my BMI is 24.7. I can improve my results by working out more and eating healthier.
    7) I think you are asking what can we keep. If we are working out how long and what can we sustain is what I think you are asking. This is important to keep us working har

  3. 1. The man in the first video was Dr. Richard Carmona, U.S. Surgeon General. He said the most pressing issue facing the U.S is obesity and it has killed 112,000 in a year. The video says this generation of American kid’s life expectancy might be shorter and the population is the heaviest in America history.
    2. Some benefits of exercising are improving your mood, gives you energy, and better sleep. These are all good for me because after school I am tired, but after I exercise I am happier and more awake.
    3. The treatment the doctor was talking about was exercising and it is the best thing to do to your heart. In the graph the highest in predictor of death is low exercise. Three things to do with the dose is how much, how often, and the intensity level. For women’s heart disease it has lowed by half, if you exercise. The average adult watches about 5 hours of TV a day. This video is called 23 ½ hours because it is limiting you to sitting, and sleeping 23 ½ hours a day and the rest should be exercising.
    4. I took the quiz and it told me I’m physically active, but I’m not quite meeting recommended levels. I looked at some of the links and I saw in the NHS choices that exercising affects your metal health and when I am tired it could be my mind thinking it.
    5. My score on the quiz was 30. After I took the test I thought I should walk more during the day. One thing I can do is when I’m sitting down and I need something I should get it myself, instead of asking someone to get it for me.
    6. It took me 17:49 to walk one mile. Before the walk my heart rate was 60 beats and after my walk my heart rate was 108 beats. I did 10 push-ups before I got tired. I tried the stretch with the measuring stick and I was four inches away from touching my toes. I measured my waist and I am 31 inches and my BMI is 18.3.
    7. What I can sustain means to me is keep up by being active and staying fit. An example is sustaining a time in running. It is important to sustain what you can do because your body can get in better shape and stronger.

1.The man in the video was DR. Richard Carmona. This man was saying that obesity is the number one problem in our country today. The problem our country is worried about is terrorism. Terrorism only took 28 US citizens lives! Obesity took 112000 lives in 2006 when terrorism only took 28 that is crazy to think about when we are all focused on terrorists!! This generation of children is the most overweight generation in history.

2 .Something that you haven’t talked about that I like in this passage is that when you exercise it puts you in a good mood and it just lets all of your energy out. I mainly exercise for football because I want to be a good big fast strong football player and it only makes me better if I work out. I also like to exercise because who doesn’t want to look good! There are so many benefits to exercising you would be stupid not to.

    3. – The treatment that the doctor is talking about in the second video is 23 and half an hours.
    - The best thing that you can do for your health is exercise.
-The worst death predictor in the US was low fitness
    - The 3 doses are how long how often and how intense. And we need to consider these things wisely.
    - The woman reduced their heart disease rates by almost half.
-The average adult in the USA tends to watch 5 hours of TV in one day!!
-The doctor calls it 23 and an half hours because he only wants us to exercise 30 minutes to a hour a day.
    4. Took the Quiz. My score was good. On the useful link page I found out that you should exercise 150 minutes a week. And for beginners it is recommended to do 3 times a day for 10 minutes so you are breaking the time up.
    5. My overall score was a 21 and I’m living a fitness life it says. I could run more and I’m going to start running a mile 5 times a week.
    6. when I did the brisk walk my heart beat was 125 because walking doesn’t get me tired I feel like I can walk forever without getting tired or anything!
When I did the push up test I could only do 37 in a row because I’m strong but my muscles don’t have very good endurance.
When I did the I did the sit and reach I got 24 inches I used to be able to get 30 in 8th grade! I should be stretching a lot more.
My waist was a 36 inch and I don’t know if that’s big or not. My bmi was that I was overweight and I don’t think that that’s the case.
    7. It means can you sustain like the exercises you do and you have to find the stuff that you like to do and do it for you exercises to make them more enjoyable. And so you don’t quit all you exercise and keep with them.

    1) The mans name is Dr. Richard Carmona, and Obesity is the issue. 112,000 people were killed. This generation has the heaviest generation in American history.
    2) Exersize improves peoples moods, and boosts energy, both of those are things I could use! :) Others that are helpful, are that it gives you better sleep, and it can be fun all around!
    3) medicine is the exersize.
Excersize was the best thing you could do for your health.
    Cardio respiratory fitness.
At our age, an hour a day is our "does".
One hour a week, decreased chances by almost half.
The Average American Adult About 5 hours a day watching TV.
This was called 23 1/2 hours because basically what he was saying was, between sitting, and sleeping, do you not have one half hour to get out and get active?
    4) Jumping rope burns 110 calories in 10 minutes! One of the best things you can do, is just walk, it helps with almost every aspect of fitness!
    5) My score was 9, I am average, I could walk more than I do. Work on my sport ALOT more, and it was a good idea to do little exersizes while I watch TV! :)
    6) 98 beats per minute. 7 push ups.
    7) What you can keep up, and what you can acctually do!

    1. The man talking in the video is Dr. Richard Carmona (US Surgeon General). He says that the most pressing issue today is obesity. In that year it was estimated that 112,000 were killed from obesity. The video says that this generation of children is the heaviest in American history.
    2. Some benefits are that exercise gets you ready/fit for a sports program; exercise also makes you feel better about yourself. Some benefits that I get is that it gets me ready for football, it controls my weight, and I feel overall better when I exercise.
    3. A) The treatment is exercise. B) He says the best thing you can do for your health is be active for 30 minutes. C) Low Fitness was the strongest predictor of death. D) The 3 things to think about the dose is how much, how often, and how intense. E) They were decreased by almost half. F) The average American adult spends 5 hrs a day watching TV. G) He is asking if you can limit you sitting and sleeping to just 23½ hrs a day.
    4. (Test results on back) I learned that adults need to do an aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity each week to stay healthy.
    5. My score was 32. I could run up stairs or jog to and from places.
    6. A) 66-before, 78-after. B) 31 push-ups before I had to stop. C) I reached 18 ½ inches. D) My BMI is 21.98. My plan would be to go to crossfit daily and try to beat the best time. I will do this by getting rid of my excuses that I try to give so I don’t have to go.
    7. How far you can push yourself without damaging yourself. This is important so you don’t have regrets or lifelong damage to your body.

  7. 1. The man in the first video is Dr. Richard Carmona. He says the most pressing matter in America is obesity. Obesity killed 112,00 people in a year. The video also says that this generation of children is the heaviest in American history.

    2. One of the benefits stuck out to me a lot. This benefit was that exercise improves mood. I think this can be true especially for me. Right before I go for a run I don’t want to but when I’m done sometimes I feel like doing it again!

    3.
    - The treatment the doctor was talking about in the second video was exercise.
    - The doctor specifically says that the best thing you can do for your health is spend half an hour to an hour being active.
    - The strongest predictor of death according to the bar graph was low fitness levels.
    - The three things to consider about the “dose” are how long, how often, and how intense.
    - Women’s heart disease rates were decreased by almost half because of exercise.
    - The average American adult spends about 5 hours a day watching TV.
    - The doctors talk is called 23 ½ hours because he is challenging us to limit our sitting and sleeping to 23 ½ hours a day. If we did that we would get 30 minutes of exercise each day.

    4. I clicked on the “ten minute workout” link. I learned that adults can reach their minimum target of exercise by doing three 10-minute sessions, five days a week.

    5. My score was 17, it said that my fitness level is good. I could set goals and work more on muscle building to raise my score on this test.

    6. My BMI did not even show up on a BMI table I found, so I had to find a BMI calculator and that told me that my BMI was 17.2. My waist circumference is 29.5 inches. My sit and reach trial #1 was 11 inches, my trial #2 was 13 inches and my trial #3 was 12 inches. I was only able to do 20 push-ups in a row. My resting heart rate before the mile walk was 90 bpm, after the walk it was 114 bpm. The mile walk took me about 12 minutes. In order to improve these results I need to continue to do them on a regular basis. I would also need to track my progress.

    7. By saying “what you can sustain” I think you mean what you can do at a regular basis and continue to do it. Basically what is within your limits. It is important to know this so that you do not get injured.

  8. 1. The man in the fist video is Dr. Richard Carmona, U.S. Surgeon General. He says that the most pressing issue in America is obesity. Obesity killed 112,000 in one year. The video says that this generation of children is the most overweight ever, and they have a less life expectancy than their parents.
    2. Some benefits of exercise that you have not talked about are it helps you be in a good mood, it helps you control your weight, and it will give you more energy. Some benefits for me in exercise are they will keep me in shape so that I have more stamina in sports. Another benefit for me is that it will help me keep my weight at the right spot.
    3. The treatment that the doctor is talking about in the video is exercise. The doctor says that the best thing that you can do for your health is exercise for at least thirty minutes a day maybe one hour. The strongest predictor of death in the population was low fitness. Three things to consider about the dose is how much, how often, and how intense. The amount of women’s heart disease was decreased by the treatment was reduced by almost half. The amount of TV that an average adult spends watching is five hours a day. The video is called 23 ½ hours, because that is the amount of time that you have that you don’t have to or should be exercising.
    4. Some things that I learned from the link are that getting fit is not a very hard thing to do. Another thing that I learned is all you need is about 150 minutes of exercise a week to stay healthy that is about 30 minutes for five days.
    5. The score that I got on the test was 17. Something that I can do to make me more active is to try harder to achieve my fitness goal for each week and eat healthier foods.
    6. My pulse after walking a mile was 84 beats in a minute. My time in my mile was 9 min and 42 seconds and my pulse for that mile was 90 beats. The number of push ups that I did was 38. The distance that I could reach stretching was 11 inches twice and I reached 12 inches once. My bmi is 18.1. A way that I am going to improve these is work out more, eat more, and exercise more.
    7. What you mean by what you can sustain is what you can do everyday to keep your fitness level at the right level. This is important because if your fitness level is not at the right level then you might find yourself becoming obese.

    3. The invention that the dr. is talking about is exercise. The best thing you can do for your health is being active for a half hour. The strongest predictor of death in a population is low fitness. Three things to consider about the dose are, how much? How often? The dr.’s talk is called 23 ½ hours a day because if we get that 30 min of exercise in we will be healthier.

    4. On the couch to 5k I learned I could get a plan for me to run so I stay fit and in shape.

    5. My score was 11. What I can do to exercise more is to make a plan and start slow and get faster.

    6. For the mile it took me 18 min and 46 seconds. My beats per minute before were 108, and 138 after the run. I did 38 push-ups before I needed a rest. The way I plan to improve this is by working out everyday.

    7. What I think it means by what you can sustain is how far you can push your body. It is important because we don’t want to push are body to hard or we will hurt ourselves.

  10. 1. Dr. Richard Carmona is the man in the first video. The most pressing issue is obesity. There are at least 110,000 people killed per year. This generation is the heaviest in history.

    2. Some benefits that are helpful are: exercise controls weigh, exercise combats health conditions and diseases, exercise boosts energy, and exercise can be fun. Some benefits that help me are that exercising is fun and it controls my weight.
    3. The intervention is called breadth.
The best thing you can do is exercise and walking.

The three things are how long, how much and how often.
They were reduced by almost half.
They spend an average of 5 hours a day.
He calls it the 23.5 hours because the question, “Can you limit your sitting and sleeping to just 23.5 hours.”
    4. At least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, this should be a variety of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. On three days a week, these activities should involve muscle-strengthening activities, such as push-ups, and bone-strengthening activities, such running.
    5. My score was a 14. I could definitely not watch as much TV and add in and aerobic exercise.
    6. Before the walk my heart rate was 64 and after it was 102. I can do 25 push-ups without stopping. I can reach a foot sitting on the ground. I have a 32 inch waist circumference. And my body mass is 23.7.
    7. You mean that what can you do and what can your body hold before it breaks. It is important because if you go past what you can sustain you are prone to injury and worse.

  11. 1. The man in the first video is Dr. Richard Carmona, the U.S. Surgeon General. He says that the “biggest” (heh) issue facing America today is obesity. In a year, obesity kills 112,000 people. The video says that this generation of American children is the heaviest and has the shortest life expectancy.
    2. Some benefits of exercise you have not talked about are a better mood and a boost of energy. I have personally noticed that when I exercise, I am in a better mood and I sleep better at night. This more restful sleep helps me sustain that good mood and gives me a high energy level.
    3. The treatment the doctor is talking about is exercise. He says that a half an hour of exercise is the best medicine. On the graph, the strongest predictor of death in a population was low fitness. The three things to consider about the dose are the time, intensity, and frequency. Women’s heart disease rates were decreased by half. The average American adult watches 5 hours of T.V. a day. The talk is called 23 and a half hours because he challenges you to limit your resting to 23 and a half hours a day.
    4. In the link about the ten minute workouts, I learned that adults should have 150 minutes of aerobic exercise every week. I also learned that you can easily get there by doing three ten minute exercises, five times a week. I also learned of good techniques to fit exercise in your day, such as cycling in front of the tv instead of sitting on the couch.
    5. I got a score of 10, which is average. I could increase this score by eating healthier, setting and meeting goals, and exercising more. I could also watch less T.V.
    6. My pulse before the walk was 78 bpm and it was 120 bpm afterwards. My time was 21 minutes and 3 seconds. I can improve this by running every day and increase my heart rate every time. I can do 20 pushups in a row before resting. I can increase this by pushing myself to do more every day. My distance on the flexibility test was 18 inches. I can increase this number by stretching every day. My waist circumfrence is 35 inches. My BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 which is normal. I don’t need to improve these results because I am at the recommended level. I could work on making more of that weight into muscle though.
    7. “What you can sustain” means that you sould be able to keep up the exercise indefinitely. It is important not to make the exercise seasonal and make it a daily thing.

  12. 1. The guy in the first video was Dr. Richard Carmona. He said that the most pressing issue facing America was obesity. This issue killed 11,200 people. The video says that kids in this generation aren’t really expected to keep their fitness like back then.
    2. Some benefits from exercising that Ms. Bonine did not talk about are it improves you’re mood, it lets you get better sleep, and it helps you with your sex life. The benefits for me in exercising would be better sleep and boosts energy.
    3. The treatment the doctor is talking about in the second video is the 23 ½ hours. The doctor says that the best thing you can do for your body is exercising. According to the graph the stronger predictor of death is low fitness. Three things to consider about the dose is how much, how often, and how intense. Women’s heart disease decrease by treatment by almost half. The average adult spends about five hours a day watching TV. The doctors talk is called 23 ½ hours because he wants you to limit your sleeping and siting to only 23 ½ hours a day.
    4. I clicked on 150 minutes. I learned that adults should do 150 minutes aerobic activity per week. These things can be walking, riding a bike, playing double tennis, or water aerobics. Also doing errands and shopping can add to your 150 minutes of exercise.
    5. My score was 19. How I could improve with this is by basing my workouts more on strength.
    6. My pulse before my walk was 84 beats per minute. After my walk my pulse was 144 beats per minute. For the muscular fitness test I could do 20 pushups without stopping. On the flexibility test my best reach was 23 inches. For the last test the length around my waist was 34 inches. My BMI was 17092.54.
    7. What Ms. Bonine means about what you can sustain is what your body can handle without going into the danger zone of passing out. This is important because you don’t want to over work your body and risk to a heart attack.

  13. 1) The man in the first video is Dr. RIchard Carmona, U.S. Surgeon General. He says the most pressing issue facing America is obesity. This issue killed 112,000 in one year. This video says that this generation of American children is the heaviest generation in American history.
    2) Some benefits of exercise are: it helps control your weight, it helps prevent diseases and sicknesses, it improves your mood, it helps to boost your energy level, it helps to give a more restful sleep, and it can be fun. Exercise benefits me because when I’m done I always feel better overall and I have more energy.
    3) The “intervention” or “treatment” the the Dr. is talking about is fitness. The Dr. says specifically that the best thing you can do for your health is a half hour, maybe even a full hour, of being active. The strongest predictor of death in a population is low fitness. The three things to consider about the “dose” are: how . Women’s heart disease rates decreased by half by the “treatment”. The average American adult spends 5 hours a day watching tv. The Dr.’s talk is called “23 1/2 Hours” because exercise only takes half an hour, and then after that we can spend the rest of the day doing what we need to do.
    4) Exercise helps with our mental state. Working out relieves depression, tension, confusion, and fatigue. It replaces these things with a boost of energy. Also, when you achieve a goal in exercise you reach something called ‘mastery’. This helps give you self-confidence and a self-esteem boost. These things are help a lot with overall mental health. People tend to use the excuse “I’m too tired” to get out of working out. When in reality, most people are suffering from mental fatigue. If you can push through that and work out, you will feel a lot better afterwards because you’ll receive an energy boost.
    5) My score was an 8. To increase my score I can start working out on a weekly basis.
    6) 4:20 PM - heart rate: 72; 4:40 PM - heart rate: 125. 15 push-ups in a row. Stretch: 20 inches. Waist circumference: 31 1/2 inches. BMI: 23.9. My plan to improve these results is to work out more! I will do this by going every week 3-4 times.
    7) “What you can sustain” means, “What are you capable of doing?”. This is important because if you overwork yourself, you can injure yourself very easily.

    2. Exercising helps us with dealing with stress. It can also help us be motivated to do more. I deal with stress better. I am in a better mood. I am more patient.
    3. The best treatment that the doctor talks about is exercise. The best thing you can do for your health is to spend 30minutes to an hour being active. The strongest predictor of death is low fitness. Three things considered about a dose are how often, how much, and how intense. Women’s heart rates decreased by half. The average adult watches about 5 hours a day of TV. The talk is called 23 ½ hours because that is how long he is asking us to limit our sitting and sleeping to.
    4. I learned that I make the same excuses as a lot of other people. One of my top excuses is that the weather is bad. I can over come this by wearing a windbreaker.
    5. I had a 16. I can eat better and try different kinds of workouts.
    6. For the walking my heart rate was 96 BPM. I was able to do 15 push-ups. I was able to touch my toes. My waist circumfrance was 33 ½ inches, and my BMI is 21.8. I can eat better and stretch more.

    1) The man in the first video is Dr. Richard Carmona the U.S Surgeon General. To him the most pressing issue is Obesity in America. In the year 2006 around 112,000 people died from Obesity. The Video said that this generation of American Children is the heaviest in American History.
    2) Some benefits that were not talked about were: Exercise combats health Conditions and Diseases, another was: Exercise improves mood. Number 4 was Exercise boosts energy.
When I exercise, I don’t feel hungry, I feel more lighthearted and more energetic.
    3) That intervention he’s talking about is Exercise. The best thing we can do for ourselves is being active 30 minutes a day. The strongest predictor of death was very Low fitness. The three things to consider about the dose was how much, how often, and how intense. Women’s heart disease rates decreased by half by the treatment. In the USA the Average adult watches about 5 hours of TV. The talk is called 23 ½ hrs a day because with just 30 minutes a day we could improve our health.
    4) I learned that people ages 5-18 must have at least 60 minutes of exercise every day. I also learned that they must have 3 different types of exercise, aerobic, muscle-strengthening and bone- strengthening.
    5) My score was 19. I would have had a slightly higher score but I ate fast food yesterday which is rare. I could also exercise more.
    6) I walked my mile in 18 minutes and 26 seconds. Before the mile my pulse was 66 beats per minute. After, my pulse was 68 beats per minute.
In the push up test, I did 28 without stopping. First time I did flexibility I was 1 inch away and 2nd time I was ½ inch away. 3rd time I was a 1/4 inch away. My waist is 32 inches. I can improve my results are strengthening my arms back and core, eating less/ more healthily, and stretching more often.
    7) What can you sustain means, how much exercise can our body take. How intense, how often and what is done. It is important so we don’t overwork and hurt ourselves.

    2. One benefit on the website was “exercise improves mood.” One benefit in exercise for me is that I think exercising is fun, so I can enjoy exercise and become healthier.
    3. The treatment is excersize. He says the best thing you can do for your health is to spend 30-60 minutes a day being active. The strongest predictor of death was low fitness. The three things to consider about the “dose” were “how much, how often and how intense”. Women’s heart disease rates were decreased by almost half. His talk is called “23 ½ Hours” because he says that if you excersize for 30 minutes every day you get the next 23 ½ hours of the day to do whatever you want.
    4. Results: Based on your responses today you are close to meeting or exceeding the recommended levels of physical activity. This is great for your health. Keep up the good work.
I learned that it really doesn’t take a long time to exercise or work out and if you put time aside each day it is easier.
    5. I got 18 points. I could improve by making fitness goals.
    6. For the aerobic fitness before I walked my heart rate per minute was 66 and after, it was 72. For the muscular strength I did 50 push ups. For the flexibility the furthest I got was 25 ½ inches. And my BMI was 22.
    7. I think that “what you can sustain” means sustaining your weight. It is important because if you are healthy then if you change your weight you could become over or under weight.

About 112,000 people die from obesity each year, it says that this generation of children is the most overweight of all time and that we are going to have a shorter life expectancy than past generations of children.
    2. The 7 benefits of regular exercise is exercise controls weight, exercise combats health conditions and diseases, exercise improves mood, exercise boosts energy, exercise promotes better sleep, exercise puts the spark back into your sex life, and exercise can be fun. For me personally I feel like I am a healthier weight when I work out more frequently, it’s makes me in a better mood and a lot more tired afterward and I think that exercising is actually fun.
    3. The doctor in the second video is saying the best intervention you can do is to exercise. He says the best thing you can do for health is to spend a half an hour to an hour exercising every day. The strongest predictor of death is low fitness. The 3 things to consider about the dose is how much, how often and hoe intense. Womens heart rate decreased by the treatment by 70 percent. The average American adult watches about 5 hours of TV a day. The task is called 23 ½ because it is asking can we limit our sitting and sleeping to 23 ½ hours a day.
    4. I learned if you are going from a couch potatoe to running 5k than you should slowly work your way up to your goal amount so that you can build up your endurance.
    5. I scored a 16, to increase my activity level I could park further away and walk the remainder to places instead of parking as close as possible.
    6. I got 72 beats per minute before and I got 86 after the mile walk. I can do 40 push ups. I only could reach to the yardstick or about an inch past it. My BMI is around 1,515. I work out pretty much every day which helps all of those and to strtetch every day will help a lot on the stretching one.
    7. Sustaining your shape is important because after a couple of days you begin to lose the muscle you have worked so hard to gain.

    1. Dr. Richard Carmona U.S. Surgeon General talks at the beginning of the video saying that obesity is the #1 killer in America killing over 112,000 a year. This is the heaviest generation of American children.
    2. I work out simply for self esteem. It makes you feel really good if you went really hard during a workout. Even though it hurts while you’re working out, it’s a good kind of hurt knowing you’re doing your body well and taking care of it the way it should be.
    3. The intervention or treatment is exercise; taking 30 minutes to an hour walking. That is the best thing you can do. The 3 things to consider in your “doses” of exercise is : how long, how often, and how intense. In a study of this women’s heart disease rates went down almost 50%. The average American watches 5 hours of TV a day! That shocked me! So in the end the 23 ½ hours means, can you limit your sitting and sleeping to 23 ½ hours and take 30 minutes to get active.
    4. I need to do a little bit more exercise! Maybe up to 5 days a week instead of 3 or 4!
    5. My score was 16. Something I could do is start going to basketball training more and having a good mix of all the excersies.
    7. What you can sustain means to me what is the most I can do to make my level of fitness the best possible. To just work at getting better but not killing my body at the same time. It’s important because it keeps your body healthy but not hurt.

    2. Some things that working out do it boost you energy and you can’t get diseases so often. Some of those that work for me are my appearance, confidence, and my outer look.
    3. The treatment that the second video is giving us is exercise will help us with problems in the body. The best thing you can do for your body is to exercise. The strongest death in the population was low fitness. Three things of dose is how much, often and intense. It was decreased by half. About 5 hours of tv per day. It is called that because he want you to workut for 30 minutes a day.
    4. one fact that I learned is that you can increase your health with just 30 minutes of day with exercise.
    5. On the test I got a 26 and that’s: “Congratulations! You are already living the "fitness lifestyle." Consider adding different activities or varying your program to maintain interest and motivation. Examine your activities to see if you have a good balance of aerobic activity, flexibility, and strength” I could stretch more to get a better score.
    6. For the mile walk my heart rate did not increase a lot. For the push-ups I can do 52 all at once. For the sit and reach I don’t have a yard stick but I can touch my toes. My BMI is 23.1.
    7. What you can sustain is really meant as what you can maintain. It is important to sustain a workout so you can continue it and drop out of it.

    4. I learned that you can do the minimum target of medium aerobic exercise by doing 10 minute workouts at home, five days a week. But I still wont do them, I’ll stick to working out more.

    5. I scored 28 points. I could change to become more active by doing a more variety of exercises and learning what my cholesterol and blood pressure is.

    6. Walk: 11:29. Heart rate before: 78 Heart rate after: 85
    Push ups: 27
    Flexibility: 5 inches
    22 % body fat.
I can improve these results by exercising more and eating a more variety of foods.

    2. Some benefits for me that wasn’t mentioned are: exercising makes me better at sports and improves my work ethic.
    3. In the second video the dr. is talking about exercise and its many benefits. Walking specifically is a great thing do to. In the bar graph of attributable factors the strongest predictor of death in a population was “crf” or cardiovascular fitness, basically having low fitness. When considering about your dose of exercise you should think how long, how often, and how intense. Women’s heart disease rates decreased by half with the treatment of exercise. The average adult in the USA spends about 5 hours a day watching TV. The video was called 23 and a half hours because at the end of it he challenged us to limit our sitting and sleeping to 23 and a half hours.
    4. I did the first one it is called the Couch to 5K. This is a running plan developed to help beginners get into running. It is supposed to get you running half an hour or five k in nine weeks. It has five steps that are specific and will help you.
    5. My score for the “how physically fit you are” was 28 points. I could improve this by getting to school in a different way besides driving.
    6. I will improve on my fitness by cross training and working hard. Also, I need to focus on nutrition and stretching to be able to advance my own level of fitness.
    7. When you ask what you can sustain, you are asking them to look at themselves and their level of fitness. If what they can sustain isn’t much then they might want to change that. The first step in fitness is to realize that your fitness level is important.

But now I know that it doesn’t have to be that long. It can be only 10 minutes per day. I learn that exercising is not hard and not complicated.
    5. My score was 20 points. I can’t walk to school or exercise during school. I should work hard during tennis practice or conditioning. Even though there is no tennis practice, I can work out at home. I should keep my exercise program. It doesn’t matter it will be 30 minutes or less. I will exercise everyday.
    6. I should work out everyday at least 10 minutes to make my body flexible. I will not miss any tennis practices because that’s my only exercising. Nut if something happens so I can’t make practice, I will work out at home to make my fitness level higher than now.
    7. For me, “what you can sustain” means that good fitness is depends on how I do. It’s important because if I sustain hard fitness, it feels like I’m growing up as a young adult. It makes me feel I did something that is really hard.

    5. My score was a 10. To become more active, I could make time to exercise (even just walking) each day.
    6. My starting pulse was 90 beats per minute. My time was 13 minutes 23 seconds. My ending pulse was 102 beats per minute. I could do 17 push-ups before I needed to stop for rest. I could reach 14.5 inches. My weight circumference was 32 inches. My BMI was 19.7. To improve these results, I keep doing similar exercises, and gradually build up my quantities, distances, and amounts. For my daily routine, stretch, start out with 20-30 minutes of walking, and do at least 10 push-ups.

    3. He is talking about Knee Arthritis and the best thing you can do for your health is to Exercise. The most things leading to death was low fitness and 3 things to consider are How much, How often, and How intense. Women’s Heart Rate was decreased by about half and the average adult watches 3 hours a day. The other half an hour you can exercise and the 23 and ½ you can do whatever.
    4. Did it.
    5. I got a 12 and that is about average. I could go to the gym more often.
    6. I walked the mile in 20 minutes and my pulse before was 72 and after was 107. I did 23 pushups. I can get about 17 inches if I push myself. My body is thin and how I will improve is by working out more.

  29. 1. The man in the first video is a U.S. General Surgeon named Dr. Richard Carmona. He talks about that the most pressing issue America is facing isn’t terrorist but actually obesity. Obesity in one year killed about 112,000 people. This generation of children is said to have the shortest life expectancy than ever before.
    2. There were two benefits of exercise that you had not written, one was about people’s mood increasing by exercise and the other was about having extra boosts of energy throughout the day. Since I am always exercising my mood usually stays high, I usually always feel good and I feel like I am able to do a lot more in life with so much extra energy.
    3. The treatment that helps so many people and in which the Doctor is talking about in the second video is exercise. He also says that the best thing we can do for our health is to be active for a half an hour daily. In the attributed factors graph the strongest predictor of death was low fitness. The three things to consider about the dose is how much, how often and how intense. The treatment being used decreased women’s heart disease rate by almost half. The average adult spends about 5 hours a day watching television. The Dr.’s video is called 23 ½ hours because he wants us to limit the sitting and sleeping to just that amount of time and the half an hour exercising.
    4. The link I chose to go learn from was “10 minute workout”. This type of workout is just getting the minimum which is three sets of 10 minute workouts, 5 days a week. A few of the things it can prevent by staying active with these workouts are reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and maintenance of your moving ability.
    5. The score I received was a 32. In the section where I ended up it says I am getting ready for some sort of competition, which I am. So the test says I am doing really well and that I should just not overdo it.
    6. The first part of the exercise is fast walking. In the fast walking my time was 8min 20sec it was a bit fast because during the walk I started to jog. My heart rate ended up being 72 beats per min. For the push-ups part my maximum amount without stopping was 83. On my flexibility the distance my hands reached was 41inches. My BMI that I received was about 19.6 %. I guess to improve these results I can walk on a daily bases and also stretch which will help my flexibility. For my push-ups I can work on doing those every day, but for my body fat percent I don’t really need to lose any more of mine.
    7. What it means by “what you can sustain” is what can your body take is the question. For exercise its how much muscle can be put on and also what speed can you body take during a run and for how long a period of time. It is important to know how much each of our bodies can take in a workout so we do not over work ourselves which can lead up to bad problems.
