Pathogen Parade

Pathogens are a funny thing. As kids we call them “germs”, or “cooties” as if somehow giving them a cuter name will make them any less scary.

They are pretty much found everywhere, and some are able to morph and change themselves to be stronger and more resistant to the things we use to try to kill them.  So what do we do with that knowledge? Give them a cute name of course. SUPER BUGS!
Oh Look. It's SUUUUPPER BUGGG!!!

But what is a pathogen? How do they affect our daily lives, and how does someone become infected with one? Also, when people talk about Super Bugs, what are they really referring to, and how are they created?
Some of the answers to these questions are simple. A pathogen is a microorganism that can cause infection and disease.  Many times we are lulled by television into thinking that the pathogens that make us sick should look like Nickelodeon Green Slime covering a miserably sick individual. The thing to remember is, if that were true, no one would ever get sick from someone else! No one is trying to hug the person covered in green slime!

In reality, pathogens are microorganisms, too small for our eyes to see. The process of infection has four parts.
Short Video on the Spread of Infection

Think of them like a chain that has to be linked. If one link is broken, infection will not happen.  (That means that all the ways to prevent disease are aimed at one part of these four links!)

The first link, is that you have to have a pathogen. I will follow the crowd with putting faces on pathogens and find a picture (seen below), which illustrates this idea.
Such a cute lil' pathogen!

The next, is that you have to have enough of that pathogen to cause disease. One little guy on his own is not so scary. That is why in the movies, it is never just one gangster who picks up the target, it is always a football team of them!

More of the lil' guy from above! (Enough to get you sick this time!)

Imagine the guy with the ball as your body...he just can't fight off all these guys!

The third thing that has to be in place is a susceptible host. So…you. You are the pathogen’s host, and while you are being so hospitable as to have him around, he is going to make you sick as can be. One word that is particularly important is susceptible. One reason immunizations are so important, is that they make you less or even insusceptible to some diseases. So even though a pathogen normally would have made you sick, now it cannot, because you are not a susceptible host, and have broken the chain.

"WHAT!? I GET TO HOST THIS PATHOGEN!?"

The fourth item that must be in place to cause infection is a route of entry. The route of entry depends on the pathogen, but may include your respiratory tract, skin (broken), and genital membranes. For example, if you cut your finger while being a model daughter/son helping mom with dinner, and then came into contact with Hepatitis B then next day, you now have a portal of entry you previously would not have had.
                                                                 Port of Entry

The last common thing you will hear everyone talk about, in the news and just in conversation is the dreaded “superbug”. Truthfully, it should be dreaded. A “Superbug” is a bacteria, (a specific category of pathogen) which has mutated to become resistant to common antibiotics. Many of these “superbugs” are found in hospitals and nursing homes, where patients do not have an immune system as strong as yours. But that is not the only place “superbugs” are found...dun dun dun...

Now, M.R.S.A., as you may have heard, has been found running rampant in communities! MRSA is a type of staph (bacteria) infection, which no longer is killed by the antibiotics typically used to kill this pathogen.
The reason this is so incredibly scary is that if these bugs continue to become resistant to the antibiotics we use to kill them, hypothetically, eventually there may be a bacteria that becomes resistant to all antibiotics, and modern medicine is unable to treat.
There are ways that you can actually help prevent the spread and formation of “super bugs”. For example, always take your full dose of prescribed antibiotics. If you stop taking antibiotics when you feel better, some of the strongest pathogens will still be living in your body, and might develop a resistance the antibiotic you first attempted to kill them with!

Next, do not take anyone else’s antibiotics when you are sick, and never take antibiotics when you do not need them.

Lastly, and most simply, wash those hands!!

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1. In your own words, what is a pathogen?

2. Go to the link, "pretty much found everywhere", then click on "Take a tour of the interactive home".  Name some places that pathogens can be found in the home. Give specific examples, what type of pathogen & where?

3.  Watch the "short" video about the spread of infection. What did you learn from the video? What do the germs do as they multiply? What flavor of which food participates in the spread of disease?

4. Describe in your own words the "process of infection" and the things that are necessary for infection to occur. Find a website that you think describes this process well, or a video you think explains it well and link it to your post online, and make it available in this answer.

5. Click on "Vaccines are so important". Read about the vaccines. Who is the story about? In your own words, why are vaccines important? How do they prevent the spread of infection? Which part of the chain do they break? What happens to the two in the story?

5. Click on "bugs continue to become resistant". Play the news clip regarding a "super bug" in California. What are some ways in the hospital the news anchor recomends protecting yourself and loved ones from the spread of infection?

6. Select one of the bacteria or viruses from the "pretty much found everywhere" link. Create a 3-dimensional model of this "bug" to make your Pet Pathogen.

  1. 1) A Pathogen is a infectious disease that makes the host ill
    2) Some places where the pathogen can be found is bathrooms, living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and more. Some places where pathogens can be found are backbacks that have mold and staph that we catch from school, work, etc. Another example is a toilet handle with enterococcus and rotavirus.
    3) What I learned from this video is that I should never sneeze on my hands, but if I do, I need to wash them right away without touching anything. I totally forgot how easy it is to get germs on your hands without even knowing. What the germs do as they multiply is wait till they find a new host and then it keeps going. The flavor of food that participated in the video is glazed, sprinkle, and chocolate donuts.
    4) The process of infections is it starts out with the germ on a table for example, then a person sits down and then puts his/her hands on table and then gets the disease and is now the new host. This is the website for the video I found. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67ays2ZYr48&feature=related
    5) The story about vaccines is that it takes a while for people resist there sickness, while others it just comes naturally that nothing affects them. Vaccines are very important because they heal your sickness and if u get it, your body resists it and you will not get sick from it anymore.
    6) Some ways of protecting ourselves and loved ones from the spread of infection is ask doctors and nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out ASAP, and eat yougart.
    7) My pathogen is the rotavirus.
The place its most commonly found in bathrooms.
The pathogen spreads by dirty hands touching things like handles, toys, etc.
How we can prevent the pathogen to spread is to wash hands, clean tooth brushes, clean laundry daily, disinfect things, and more. Yes there is a vaccine for it.

  2. 1. A pathogen is a germ that causes your body to not function properly.
    2. Pathogens are found almost anywhere. E. coli, for example, can be found on a cutting board if you do not wash it properly. Staph is found any place a human touches. You can find it on a doorknob.
    3. I learned a lot from this video. People can get germs all over the food you eat because the touch it(or even breath on it) and the food gets those germs. The germs sing as they multiply. Pathogens live best on sweet food, like donuts.
    4. For any infection to occur, the germ itself has to exist. Then, it has to multiply and infect multiple creatures. Once it infects a human, the human then hosts the pathogen. Then, the human spreads it to another human, and the cycle repeats itself repeatedly. The site http://www.wisc-online.com/Objects/ViewObject.aspx?ID=NUR1603 explains this process thoroughly.
    5. The story of vaccines is about Chip and Dale, to kids. Chip and Dale play with a kid who has measles, but Chip gets infected. He eventually has to go to the hospital, where he eventually recovers. He never gets measles again, because he now has immunity to it, as Dale had already. Vaccines can save people’s lives and give them a stronger immunity. Vaccines give dead germs into the blood where cells memorize them and fight them off in the future. They break the part of the chain where the host is susceptible to the disease.
    6. To stop infection, nurses recommend that you ask hospital workers to wash their hands and remove catheters quickly. Eating yogurt can help too. The last thing is to not assume something is clean just because it looks like it.
    7. My pathogen is called Rhinovirus. Rhinovirus is commonly found on steering wheels, a tissue box, and the trashcan. You can find it on the coffee table or on your video game controllers. Spreading it is quite easy: touch anything with the virus, and then touch your face. It causes many colds and respiratory infections. Washing your hands can prevent spread of this disease, but there is no cure.

    1. I would describe a pathogen as a microorganism that causes harm and diseases in the body. Your immune system is what fights these off.

    2. In the bathroom on the toilet handle you can find 2 types of bacteria: Roctavirus and Enterococcus. In the living room on the coffee table you can find Rhinovirus and dust.

    3. As the germs multiply they sing. The chocolate flavor of the doughnuts helped spread the disease.

    4. In order for an infection to occur there must be a virus, a host and a means of travel. The virus typically finds a habitat that is moist and warm. From there they are transmitted to a new host like a person or animal by touch or by air. That point is when the person has become infected. But they may not feel the side effects depending on the disease. http://ezinearticles.com/?Infection-Process-and-Infection-Control&id=3345689

    5. The story in the link is about 2 kids getting infected by measles. One of them feels the symptoms, one of them doesn’t. I think vaccinations are important because people can become immune to a disease without getting the symptoms, like Dale. With vaccinations you don’t have to be lucky. Vaccinations prevent the spread of infection because if everyone is immunizes then there is nowhere for the disease to go. They break the part of the chain between the pathogens original home and it infecting someone. The two kids in the story become immune to the disease.

    6. The news anchor in the video says to ask nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out ASAP and eat yogurt.

    7. Name- Rondo
    Places commonly found- wild animals
How pathogen is spread- usually through saliva from a bite from a wild animal or an animal infected with it. The disease travels through the nerves and you will not feel symptoms until it reaches the brain and at that point it is incurable.
Symptoms- Fever, Headache, Agitation, Anxiety, Confusion, Difficulty swallowing, Excessive salivation, Fear of water (hydrophobia) because of the difficulty in swallowing, Hallucinations, Insomnia, Partial paralysis.
Prevention/vaccination- there is a vaccination but once the symptoms show up there is no cure. There are not many ways to prevent this besides don’t get bit by animals and if you are bit seek medical attention because there is a possibility that you have been infected.

  4. OOPS!! FORGOT TO ADD #7...

    7. My pathogen I chose is Salmonella. It’s commonly found in the intestinal tracts of humans and other animals, including birds (and a lot in chicks’ feces). A small amount is also found in eggs. It’s spread by eating foods contaminated with animal feces, by people who don’t wash their hands, and by infected food handlers who handle food after not washing their hands after using the restroom. Some symptoms it causes are diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The spread of salmonella can be prevented by cooking poultry, meet, and eggs thoroughly, washing your hands and utensils immediately after contact with raw meat or poultry, not eating raw or undercooked eggs, poultry, or meat, and by avoiding direct or indirect contact with reptiles.

  5. 1. A pathogen, in my own words, is a small organism that can make us sick.
    2. On pretty much any surface in anyone’s home, there can live the pathogen called Staph. For example, staph could be multiplying on my cupboards right now. A nasty germ that can be found on the keyboard is called enterococcus. If you eat while on the computer you can get this and possibly get diarrhea and food poisoning. This kind of worries me right now as I am typing this .
    3. In the video did not really learn anything new. I guess I learned that people like to stroke food with their nasty hands. In the video, the germs sang and spread around as they multiplied. The guy ate the chocolate doughnut and now he has those sneeze germs in his stomach.
    4. The process of infection is the germ multiplies, finds a host, and finds a port of entry in the host’s body. The germ enters the body and starts messing it up. http://youtu.be/49GD-vfvuHE This link is to a good video that explains the chain of infection.
    5. The story was about two kids named Chip and Dale. They both get the measles, but only one of them get the symptoms. The one who did not show symptoms had an asymptomatic infection. It is important to get vaccines because they cause asymptomatic infection and the person treated will never get the real disease ever again. By getting a vaccine, you have broken the susceptible host part of the chain.
    6. The news anchor recomends asking the doctors and nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out as soon as possible, and to eat yogurt.
    7. The “bug” I chose is called the Trichophyton. It is commonly found on the floors of bathrooms/locker-rooms, shower mats, shower curtains and on athletic equipment and clothes. It is a fungus that is passed through contact. You can prevent infection by wearing closed shoes. There is no vaccine. The symptoms of athlete’s foot are itching, burning, and stinging between the toes.

  6. 1. A pathogen is a disease and infection- causing microscopic organism.
    2. In the interactive home, pathogens can be found in the bedroom, the kitchen, the bathroom, the living room, and other places in the house. For example, in the bedroom, you can find dust mites and mold on the rug, staph and rotavirus on the bed, rhinovirus on the tissue box, dust on the television, and all over the room are other pathogens!
    3. From the short video on spreading germs, I learned that there are germs all over and even inside us. When we cough or sneeze like in the video, the germs travel and continue to multiply while being spread. In doing so, others can easily get infected with the germ or illness you had. In the video, the pathogens would sing as they multiplied; and a chocolate doughnut participated in the spread of germs.
    4. The process of infection occurs when a career is carrying a pathogen of some diseases, and when they sneeze, for example, the germs are released and spread. Sneezing into your hand is not the smartest choice because what you touch will carry the germs until it finds another host to attach onto and infect. Washing your hands thoroughly and sneezing or coughing into your elbow will help keep germs away from areas you and others encounter every day. http://youtu.be/DYKADcR34Y8
    5. This story is about Chip and Dale. Vaccines are important because they help prevent the chance of getting infected or infecting someone else. Vaccines create an immunity to the disease in your body and in this case, the two boys will have an immunity to measles the rest of their lives because of their memory B cells. At the end, both Chip and Dale grew an immunity to measles and would never get them again.
5 (part 2). In the hospital, the spread of infection is very high in risk. The news anchor says that we can protect ourselves and loved ones from germ and disease by asking doctors and nurses to wash their hands before treating and attending to you or a loved one (also to wear gloves), get catheters out immediately because that is a target for direct infections, and eat yogurt to help fight out harmful bacteria.
    6. My pet pathogen is named Herculitis Rhinovirus and is the rhinovirus germ. This pathogen lives on many places such as in the bedroom on small object such as a tissue box or a trash bin. This germ is spread when contaminated areas the germ is roaming on are touched followed by touching their nose, eyes, mouth, and can be passed on from person to person by sneezing, coughing, sharing drinks, food, silverware, lipstick, etc. The symptoms of this pathogen are runny nose, coughing, sneezing, fever, stuffy nose, cold-like symptoms. It can be prevented by washing your hands and sneezing or coughing into your elbow to prevent germs from spreading through the air.

  7. 1. A pathogen, though appearing cute and fun, is actually dangerous. Another name for a pathogen is a germ. Pathogens cause disease by usually following four steps. First there is the pathogen or germ, next there are enough grouped to potentially cause disease. The third step is the host comes along, and the fourth is that the germ finds a place to enter on the host and then starts to infect.

    2. Germs are truly found almost everywhere. For example, a tissue box has the pathogen rhinovirus, which causes a cold. Also staph can be found on places like your light switches, cabinets, as well as many others. Honestly, this is very gross. I did not want to explore the living room because that is where I am doing this assignment.

    3. Well that video was cute, weird, and frightening. I learned that germs are everywhere and yucky. I have never thought about germs multiplying in the sink drain. The germs sang as they multiplied, probably because they were happy they had a surface or host to multiply on. ☺ The flavor chocolate adds in the spread because the girl wanted to try some chocolate and the man wanted the chocolate doughnut. At least the girl washed her hands that stopped some spread of germs.

    4. There are four main links for the process of infection. There can be six links though. The first one of the four is the germ like what kind it is (bacteria, virus, fungi, or tiny animal) and what it attacks. The second step is where the germ lives. The third step is the host that the germ will infect. The fourth step is the entry point, where the germ enters the host and then begins to infect. The other two steps are how the germs are spread and how the germ links on to the host.

5a. The stories are about Chip and Dale. The stories are about the different ways the immune system fights off a disease. Vaccines are important because it gives you some of a disease. Your immune system will fight that disease and create “memory B cells.” These cells remember how to fight off any infection you have had before. In other words, if you get the flu shot, you are less likely to get the flu because your body has fought the flu before and created “memory B cells” for the flu. This helps prevent the spread of the flu or any infection. Memory B cells break the pathogen chain of spreading the infection to others. In the two stories, the boys were both exposed to the measles, but their bodies fought the infection different. Chip developed symptoms, fought the infection, and now has memory B cells. Dale had an asymptomatic infection. By looking at the word “asymptomatic,” I noticed the word symptom in it. Dale did not have any symptoms but his body still created memory B cells. Both the boys are now immune to the disease.

5b. The news anchor recommends to prevent a super bug that you first ask you doctor or nurse to wash their hands. Also you can simply eat yogurt. You need to get a catheter out too. These can easily carry infection because of the access to someone’s body.

    6. I chose salmonella for my pet pathogen. I thought his legs and tentacle things would be fun to create! Salmonella can be found on a cutting board, in the sink, or on the stove. Salmonella is spread by food preparation with food that it is in, like raw meat and eggs. If you leave dishes with food on them, salmonella are likely to spread and produce more of this bacterium. The symptoms of salmonella are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chill, headache, and some others. There is no cure for salmonella, but you can prevent it by not eating raw eggs or meat. If you are infected with salmonella you should not prepare food for others. Sadly, this means you should not eat cookie dough…

  8. 1. Pathogens are germs, or microorganisms that can cause infection and disease.
    2. Pathogens can be found anywhere in your home. There are some in your kitchen, like E. Coli found on cutting boards, Salmonella found on your sinks, Rhinovirus found on videogame consoles and many more.
    3. I learned that germs can be spread through ways that we don’t even realize from the video. The germs sang as they multiplied, and they were on the chocolate donut participated in the spread of the disease.
    4. The process of infection is when someone is when a germ is on an object, and then someone or something comes upon it. They become infected, and they start spreading the disease. http://health.mo.gov/training/epi/DiseaseProcess.html is a good website that shows a detailed “chain of infection.”
    5. The story is about Chip and Dale and how they fight off infections in two different ways. Vaccines are important because they prevent you from getting the symptoms from pathogens and getting sick. They prevent the spread of infection because they give people the natural immunity. They break the susceptible host part of the chain. In the story Chip is hospitalized, but he gets better and obtains natural immunity, while Dale had no symptoms and still developed the natural immunity thanks to his vaccination.
    6. The ways the news anchor recommends asking doctors and nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out as soon as possible, and to eat yogurt because of the good bacteria inside it.

  9. 1. To me, a pathogen is something that can make you sick or give you a disease that enters into your body by a cut or other means.
    2. Some pathogens that can be found in your home are: staph can be found on your toothbrush, RSV in your bathrooms garbage, sports gear can have mold, and your oven can have E. Coli.
    3. When the germs multiply, they sing. The flavor of a chocolate donut helps spread the disease into the woman’s mouth. Overall I learned that our hands can carry a lot of germs that we cannot see and it only takes a simple wash of the hands so we should always wash our hands.
    4. I think that the website http://health.mo.gov/training/epi/DiseaseProcess.html does a good job of describing the process of infection. To me this process is summed up as the germ is on something, such as a computer keyboard from the previous user sneezing on it and the next person that goes to use it rubs their eye after using the keyboard for a period of time. Now the disease is in the host and is capable of infecting others.
    5. The news anchors in California advise us to ask the doctors and nurses of hospitals to wash their hands, get catheters out as soon as you can, and eat yogurt to prevent getting the superbug.
    6. Pathogen Name: Trichophyton
Commonly Found: floors of locker rooms/public showers, bathtub, rugs, and shower curtains.
Spread by: Trichophyton is the most common cause of athlete’s foot so it is spread by foot to foot contact.
Symptoms: Athletes Foot which causes dry skin, itching, and burning. In severe cases it causes cracking, pain, and bleeding.
How this Pathogen can be prevented: wash and dry skin regularly. There is a vaccine and it is any form of anti-fungal therapy.

  10. 1) A pathogen is a microorganism that carries diseases and infections.
    2) One place pathogens can be found is the garage, in your car. Sports gear can pick up Mold and Trichophyton. Tricophyton can cause ringworm and athlete’s foot. Another place is the study, or office. Your computer can carry pathogens such as RSV and Enterococcus. One more place, out of many, in your home is the foyer. Your doorknob, plus almost every surface we touch, carries the pathogen Staph.
    3) I learned that germs are spread way too easily, so we need to be cautious and wash our hands! When germs multiply they sing. Chocolate donuts participates in the spread of disease.
    4) The process of infection starts with the pathogen itself. Then it has a host. This host is where the spread of germs starts. Once a new host comes in contact with the previous one, they become infected too.
    http://www.d.umn.edu/ehso/biosafety/idp1.html
    5) The story is about two five year old children named Chip and Dale. Vaccines are important because they cause you to become immune to the disease. They prevent the spread of infection by developing memory B cells. They break the the third part of the chain. The two in the story become immune to measles.
    6) Some ways the news anchor recommends protecting yourself and loved ones from the spread of infection are ask doctors and nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out as soon as possible, and eat yogurt.
    7) My pathogen is the Trichophyton. Places that it is commonly found are sports gear, the floor, rugs, shower curtains, shoes, and carpet. This germ is spread from people walking around barefoot or moist places. This pathogen causes infections of the skin, hair, and nails. The spread of this germ can be prevented by disinfectants and not walking around barefoot in locker rooms or public showers.

  11. 1. A pathogen is a germ or a bacterium that has the power to kill if not treated but could also cause no harm.
    2. There is Rhinovirus on the tissue box and there is Rotavirus and staph on the TV control. And there is Enterococcus on the toilet handle.
    3. The germs divide and they sing in the video. I learned that germs are everywhere and that the flavor is donuts.
    4. Infection happens when you cut yourself and then you do not treat it at all and let it get infected. A good website is http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com.
    5. The stories are about Chip and Dale. Vaccines are important because they help save lives and they can prevent you from getting the disease. Sometimes they give you the disease but once you get over it you will not be able to get the sickness. His immune system has developed immunity to that strain of infection. One gets the symptoms and one does not.
    6. She said to ask doctors to wash their hands and nurses too. To get the catheters out quickly and to eat a lot of yogurt.
    7. I am creating a Rotavirus. It is most commonly found in the bathroom and it gets spread because you do not wash your hands after cleaning a baby and going the bathroom. The symptoms are that you get a severe case of diarrhea. Wash your hands every day and night and at any time.

    1. A pathogen is a very small organism that can carry a disease or an infection.
    2. You can find a pathogen in any place you can find; like your shower, bed, or even the kitchen.
    3. What I learned from the video is that a germ can multiply by just dividing in half.
    4. ezinearticles.com/?Infection-Process-and-Infection-Control&id=3345689 is the website that I chose, and it describes the process as a pathogen invading the host (person) and multiplies into the resulting infection.
    5. Chip and Dale are infected with the measles, but both don't have the same symptoms. So they are both immune now, but a vaccine is what prevents that. So by getting a vaccine you are immune to the disease without getting the disease.
    6. The tips that the lady gives us is to; ask doctors to wash their hands, get catheters out, and eat yogurt.
    7. My pet germ is Tricophyton; it is found on the shower curtain, it is spread through the touch of it, and it is the cause of athletes foot, and there is no cure to this germ.

  13. 1. A pathogen is a tiny bug that infects you in many ways and gives you diseases and sicknesses.
    2. Pathogens can be found in your living room, bathroom, and bedroom. They can be found on pets, which have pathogens called pet dander. They are found in the bathroom on the toilet handle which have pathogens rotaviruses and enterococcus. Lastly in the bedroom they are found on the remote which has rotaviruses and staph.
    3. That germs can live on anything and that even when you wash your hands germs get into the drain!! As germs multiply the infect more people. In the video the doughnut helps in the spread of the disease.
    4. First, all the parts of the pathogen have to be linked if one falls apart the pathogen is dead. Next, it must have enough of the pathogen to cause disease. Thirdly, the pathogen needs you a host, to infect. Lastly it needs a port of entry like a cut in the arm or leg. The website I chose was abpischools.org.
    5. This story is about 2 boys, Chip and Dale, who are infected by a boy with measles. Vaccines are important because they help the immune system defend against pathogens. They prevent diseases by breaking the chain of infection, which is the first part of the four part chain of infection of the pathogen process. In the story Dale becomes infected by measles and gets really sick. Only when he goes to the hospital and gets a vaccine does he feel better. Chip on the other hand gets measles but doesn't get sick because he is already immune.
    6. The doctor says to help protect you and loved ones in the doctor's office, to ask the doctors to wash their hands. Next to use catheters A.S.A.P., and then to eat yogurt.
    7. MRSA is a superbug with no known cure. It can only be stopped if it is caught early or if the infected area is cut off. It is spread by contact with infected people or infected places, like toilets, tables, and dirty surfaces. The symptoms include large red sore or cut where infected area is, which pusses and is very painful.

  14. 1. A pathogen is invisible to the naked eye; it causes diseases, and infections.
    2. I went to “The Study”. I looked at the telephone and found pseudomonas, and rhinovirus. On the “Rug” I found mold and dust mites. I then looked at the “Computer” and I found RSV and enterococcus. I also looked at the “Books”, I found dust and rotavirus.
    3. I learned that, according to the video, germs are not killed by soap, just washed off and they reproduce in the pipes. The germs sing when they reproduce. The chocolate flavored donut participates in the spreading of the disease.
    4. The process of infection is the pathogen, you have to have enough in your body to get infected, then the pathogen finds a worthy host, and that host has to have a point of entry, whether it is a cut or if it is your mouth, nose or eyes. A website I think explained this well is: http://contagions.wordpress.com/2010/11/06/what-is-the-chain-of-infection/.
    5. The story is about Chip, a 5 year old boy who gets measles. The story is also about Dale, another 5 year old boy who gets measles, but he shows no symptoms. Vaccines are important because they give us dead cells of a virus or bacteria or disease so our bodies can use the memory B cells to make us immune to it or very close to that. They prevent the spread of infection by helping our bodies kill the infection. The part of the chain that is broken is the part of the chain when the new host is infected. The boys respond differently to the measles, Chip gets sick and spends a few days in the hospital, and Dale does not get any symptoms.
    6. 1. Ask doctors and nurses to wash hands.
    2. Get Catheters out as soon as possible.
    3. Eat lots of yogurt.
    7. My pathogen is the trichophyton. They are commonly found on the floors of locker rooms and public showers. They are also found in bathtubs, on shower curtains, or on floors. It is usually spread by direct contact with the pathogen. Trichophyton causes Athlete’s foot and ringworm.
It can be prevented by regularly washing the areas I said before regularly. Run the fan or open a window when taking a shower. No I don’t think there is a vaccine.

    3. That we spread tons and tons of germs all the time and can reduce that by sneezing into our sleeves and washing our hands often. When the germs spread they start to sing. The chocolate doughnut was the food used to spread the germs even more.
    4. The process of infection begins with etiologic agent then reservoir then portal of exit and mode of transportation portal of entry then susceptible host http://health.mo.gov/training/epi/DiseaseProcess.html
    5. The story is about two kids that got the measles and one got very sick because of it and the other did not probably because he had gotten a vaccination. A vaccine is basically an injection of the dead virus into your body so that your immune system can make antibodies for it. The part of the chain that the vaccines break is the reservoir. One of the boys gets the measles very badly while the other does not even get the symptoms. Some of the ways the anchor suggests helping you prevent getting the super bug is asking the doctors or nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out immediately, and eat yogurt.

    1. A Pathogen is a microorganism infects your body and makes you sick.

    2. Pathogens can be found in all rooms of your house. Salmonella can be found in the kitchen on the cutting board on countertops and anywhere else raw chicken or eggs have been. Staphylococcus be found pretty much anywhere you touch, for example: light switch, bed, and countertops.

    3. I learned all germs love conditions that are warm and wet. Also you hands have many germs on them and germs spread rapidly. In the video germs sing when they multiply. The flavor of food that participates in the spread of disease in the video was the chocolate doughnut.

    4. The process of infection starts with a micro organism that causes disease. It needs a place to grow like hands or kitchen surfaces. it is transferred from place to place by touching something, sneezing or coughing. Then it needs a place to enter the new person. Like their nose, mouth or open wound. If the person cannot resist the microbe it multiplies and causes infection. This web describes the process of infection well. http://faculty.ccc.edu/tr-infectioncontrol/chain.htm

5a. The story “vaccines are so important” is about Chip and Dale. Chip is at school and starts showing symptoms of being sick. His mom took him to the doctor and they found out he had pneumonia. Then they admitted him to a hospital, he got better and never got pneumonia again. Dale also played with the kid who had measles but he did not show any symptoms. So Dale is immune to measles because he also develops memory b cells. Vaccines are important because it helps you not get sick. Vaccines prevent the spread of disease by making your body immune so that your body can kill all the bad germs. What happens to both of them in the story is they both become immune to the disease but in different ways.

5b. Some ways we can protect ourselves and our family from the spread of infection in hospitals are to ask doctors and nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out as soon as possible, and eat yogurt.

    6. Pathogen name – Greg (Pseudomonas)
Commonly found – this germ is everywhere but likes damp places best. Other places include videogame remotes lamps and telephones.
    Spreads by – hands
Symptoms – fever, muscle pains, and chills
The spread of the pathogen can be prevented by, washing hands and disinfecting surfaces, avoiding animals that are infected with urkholderia mallei or burkholderia pseudomallei and staying out of hot tubs.

    1. In my own words a pathogen is a tiny parasite or animal that can get on or inside you and cause you to become sick or have symptoms for the animal. Some of the pathogens can actually be fatal if not properly treated.
    2. Tricophyton can be found in the mold on the shower curtain. Rhinovirus is found on the tissue box which gives you colds. Staph can be found on the light switch in the bathroom.
    3. It all starts with one person where the germ originates and it multiplies and spreads throughout the host. When the host sneezes or coughs into his/her hand it is now living on the hosts hand. Then they touch something and then a new host touches the door then eat a snack they are now a carrier of the pathogen. When they multiply they get bigger and keep multiplying. In the video the food that the pathogens were on was sweets or doughnuts.
    4. The process that occurs I explained in question 3 and the link is http://www.youtube.com/user/faronics?v=5gOJJASjJ-k&feature=pyv
    5. The story was about a man named chip. To me vaccines are important so we can build up our immune system to become immune the the vaccination. They prevent the spread of infectio0ns by giving your body dead viruses because your body never gets the same virus twice. They both had a disease and never got I looked at because they had no symptoms.
    6. My pathogens name is Mike. It is commonly found on public restrooms and it could be found in a makeup place where girls try on lipstick or in changing rooms.it is spread through direct or sexual contact. The symptoms are genital oozing fever outbreaks of rashes and sores in mouth or on genitals. The spread can not be prevented by using protection but it would help. There is no cure for herpes so if you get it you have it forever.

    1) A sometimes deadly little guy who hurts people, an icky little hoodlum running around in peoples bodies, on surfaces and in the air.
    2) Shower curtian, throw rug, sick, cutting board, oven, mop, and dog bowl sometimes are places you could find them.
    3) I learned how pathogens spread, and they sing when they multiply! :) Chocolate is the flavor!
    4) One person makes a pathway to get sick to another person, the germs get to the next person, and the same cycle goes on and on and on.
    http://health.mo.gov/training/epi/DiseaseProcess.html
    5) The story is about Chip&Dale! :) Vaccines are important, because they are like trainers for your immune system, the trainers will push the "student" (immune system) hard, but it wont push tooooo hard, just enough to get it ready to fight the "other team" The germs. They prevent people from getting sick, which intern, breaks the chain of so many others getting sick. In the end of the story both of the children are fine and develop cells that help the body to be immune to the disease. :) yay!
    6) To help protect yourself from the sickness in hopsitals, get cathater out as soon as you can, and the doctors and nurse to wash their hands, and at a lot of yogurt! Banana cream pie lite by yoplait is my favorite. :))

  23. 1. A pathogen is an organism that directly causes disease by attacking the cells of your body, either by destroying them or taking them over for its own work, so that the body can not function correctly.
    2. Pathogens such as E.Coli and Salmonella can be found on the cutting board in the kitchen. Pathogens such as the Rhinovirus can be found on the tissue box in the bedroom. Finally, pathogens such as Trichophyton can be found on sports gear in the SUV in the garage.
    3. From the video, I learned that liquid soap produces the best result for killing pathogens while washing your hands. As they multiply, the germs sing and dance. Donuts help spread the disease.
    4. To start an infection, you have to have a pathogen, the disease-causer. Only one pathogen will not be able to infect you: there has to be multiple pathogens to cause an infection. A one-celled pathogen will not be able to do much alone against the millions of cells of the human body. To cause an infection, it has to have a "susceptible host": someone or something that is vulnerable to its specific method of causing disease. Lastly, it needs a way to get into that host, or an open point of entry on your body. An example of these entry ports would be something like an open cut or through your nose. I think this website explains the last link in the chain particularly well: http://health.indianblogger.com/entry-of-infection-into-human-body/
    5. The story is about two five-year-olds named Chip and Dale. Vaccines are important because they protect you from feeling the full effects of many dangerous diseases, even though they may cause some immediate discomfort. They prevent infections from spreading by causing "asymptomatic infections", which help the body learn how to fight off the virus without it having to go through experiencing all the symptoms. It breaks the third part in the chain, your susceptibility. In the story, both Chip and Dale play with the same infected boy and catch his disease, but Chip develops all the symptoms of it, while Dale does not, getting infected asymptomatically instead.
    6. The news anchor recommends you to ask your doctors and nurses to wash their hands, to remove your catheters as soon as possible, and to eat lots of yogurt in the hospital in order to be protected from the infection's spread.
    7. My pathogen was named the Rotavirus. It is commonly found in the bathroom, on places such as the faucet and toilet handle. It is spread through people coming into contact with fecal matter. This is why it is found on the toilet handle and faucet: they are some of the first things you touch after going to the bathroom. Some symptoms of it include watery diarrhea (it is one of the leading causes of diarrhea among children), fever, and vomiting. As no other methods of infection really have an effect, vaccination is the major method of preventing the spread of this virus.

  24. 1. The organisms or substances that cause diseases.
    2. Bathroom, study room, bedroom, living room, etc. For example, in the study room, there are some enterococcus and RSV in the computer. Also, in the books, there are dusts and rotavirus.
    3. I learn that I need to wash my hands after we sneezed. The germs spread out as they multiply. The flavor of food that participates in the spread of disease is sweats.
    4. Processes of infection mostly start with people who did not wash their hands. The people touch things and other people touch the same thing. The germ spread out to those people and they might have infection because of that. The things that are necessary for infection to occur are eating spoiled foods, not washing hands, contacting with people who are infected.

    5. The story is about Chip who had pneumonia and Dale who did not have any symptoms. The vaccines are important because they prevent the disease. They prevent the spread of infection by making antibiotic. They break the cold chains.
    6. The news anchor recommends asking doctors and nurses to wash hands, getting catheters out as soon as possible, and eating yogurt.
    7. - The name of the pathogen is rhinovirus.
    - It can be found everywhere.
    - When people touch the rhinovirus and then touch their nose or eyes, this pathogen is spread.
    - The symptoms of rhinovirus are runny nose, blocked nose, sneezing, sore throat, headache, etc.
    - It can be prevented washing hands. Also, it does not have vaccines.

  25. 1. A pathogen is a living micro organism, that causes disease.
2.Pathogens can be found in the living room, bathroom, foyar, nurserey, kitchen and the bedroom, even more areas.
*A pathogen that can be foud in your living room is called rhinovirus, this pathogen can be found on your video games, it is the pathogen that causes colds.
*A pathogen that can be found in your nurserey is called rotovarvirus, this pathogen can be found on a changing table, this pathogen causes diarrhea among small children.
*Another pathogen that can be found in the common places of your hme is in your kitchen, this pathogen is called E.coli, this can be found on kitchen knifes or stove tops, it comes from raw meat and causes stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
    3. What i learned from this video was, some germs are viruses and some germs are bacteria. All germs love conditions that are warm, wet, and dark.
As the germs multiply they begin to spread all over.
The flavor of food that participates in the spread of disease is the chocolate doughnut, the glazed doughnut and the sprinkled doughnut.

    4. The process of infection is kind of like a chain. It starts with one host ( carrier ), then comes the place were the infection lives and multiplys, then comes the area or way of exit that the infections excapes, next is the way or how it enters the new host, then comes the entry of the host this is usually the same way that the infection left the old host, the last step is if the infection actually harms you your either susceptible or your immune to it.
the web site I used- http://health.mo.gov

    5. The story is about a kid that is around a child who has measles, chip got infected with measles because he wasnt immune to the disease, yet dale was already immuned to it so he did not get measles even though he was infected with the virus he didnt have any symptoms.
Vaccines are important because they build up are immune system, they make our body immune to the specific virus.
Vaccines prevent the spread of infection because they make your body immune to the specific "disease" or "illness".
The part of the chain that vaccines break is the last step. The step were either you are susceptible to the infection or you are immune to it, so you either get it our you dont.
What happen to the two in the story was one kid got the infection because his body was not immuned to it, yet the other but gale, had a natural immunity to the infection so he did not get it.

    5. The news anchor recomends us to ask doctors to wash their hands, eat yogurt, and get catheters out ASAP or any tube from outside going into your body to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the spread of infection.

    6.
    - Rhinovirus
    - sharing drinks, tissue boxes, video games, trash cans, baby mobiles, door handles and lamps etc.
    - this pathogen is spread by people who touch a rhinovirus contaminated surface then touch their nose or eyes.
    - runny nose, mucus buildup in your nose, difficulty breathing, swelling of your sinuses, sneezing, sore throat, cough, and headaches.
    - This can be prevented by just washing your hands more often, and try not to touch your eyes, mouth or nose. Cover you mouth with your elbow when you cough or sneeze. There isnt a real vaccine,i guess you could say, there are alot of remedies like drinking tea or eating chicken noodle soup etc.

    RCT32!!!!!!

    1. A pathogen to me is a tiny little microscopic bug that makes you sick and attacks your immune system. A pathogen is anything that may cause a disease.

    2. A pathogen can be found in many places including the bathroom. The waste basket in a bathroom may be carrying a rhinovirus, the mirror on the wall or cabinet mirror could be carrying staph, the shower curtains could have mold on it or tricophyton on them. Another place that pathogens may be is the kitchen. The faucet in the kitchen may carry E.coli or it may be carrying salmonella, the floor may be carrying dust which may have molds and dead skin in the dust. The toaster may have roaches and roaches infect anything that they touch.

    3. I learned that germs are literally everywhere and they can carry thing like bacteria. Germs multiply the best in warm, wet and dark places.whn the germs start to multiply they start to sing. Doughnuts participate in the spread of this disease.

    4. In the process of infection first there has to have a source where this virus is coming from. Second there has to have a carrier to get to what it is infecting. Third it has to have this pathogen infect you or get into your system. Fourth you start to get sick and feel weaker so you are infected. Fifth you take medicine and antibiotics and get lots of risk to have your immune system fight this disease off.

    5. It is the story of Chip and Dale. Vaccinations are so important because they take the risk out of it. When they vaccinate you it does not usually get you sick so you do not have to go through the severe sickness that you would have had to go through later in life. It also makes your immune system stronger against them so in the future you won’t have them. In the story they both end up immune to it, but Dale did not have to go through the sickness part of it. The part of the chain they break is when Chip gets rid of it so he will not get anyone sick anymore through carrying the disease.

    6. Some of the ways the news anchor tell us to protect us and our loved ones is to eat yogurt, tell the nurses to wash their hand often, and get catheters out as soon as possible.

    7. The type of my pathogen is dust mite I’m going to name him Robert Jr. This pathogen can be found in nurseries in the house or anywhere where there could be dust. This pathogen is spread by if you touch dust and its holding the dust mites you may get infected. Always clean and have as little of dust as possible. This pathogen triggers your allergies. Dust mites are tiny bugs that feed on scales of human skin. Cytos is the vaccine for this pathogen.

Remote control in bedroom has rotavirus and staph.
Tissue box in bedroom has rhinovirus.
Rug in bedroom has mold and dust mites.
    3. Watch the "short" video about the spread of infection. What did you learn from the video? What do the germs do as they multiply? What flavor of which food participates in the spread of disease?
I learned about binary fission of germs. Germs do binary fission. Doughnut spread of disease.
    4. Describe in your own words the "process of infection" and the things that are necessary for infection to occur. Find a website that you think describes this process well, or a video you think explains it well and link it to your post online, and make it available in this answer.
Process of infection is stage of to get germs. Process of infection occur from host who is origin of germs.
    5. Click on "Vaccines are so important". Read about the vaccines. Who is the story about? In your own words, why are vaccines important? How do they prevent the spread of infection? Which part of the chain do they break? What happens to the two in the story?
This story about Chip and Dale. Vaccines prevent to get infectious disease. Vaccines is to use human's immune system which means, vaccines shot weak or dead virus so memory cell can defense our body so quickly. They break second part of the chain. Chip and Dale make memory cell of measles.
    5. Click on "bugs continue to become resistant". Play the news clip regarding a "super bug" in California. What are some ways in the hospital the news anchor recommends protecting yourself and loved ones from the spread of infection?
    Anchor recommends wash hands.
    6. Select one of the bacteria or viruses from the "pretty much found everywhere" link. Create a 3-dimensional model of this "bug" to make your Pet Pathogen.
    - Name your pathogen (1 pt)
    - Name places commonly found (1pt)
    - Describe how pathogen is spread (2 pts)
    - What symptoms does this pathogen cause? (1 pt)
    - How can the spread of this pathogen be prevented? Is there a vaccine? (1 pt)

In other words, a way of getting into the host so it is able to spread more. http://www.healthmedialab.com/html/infectious/process.html
    5. The story is about Chip and Dale, two kids that play with another child with measles, but they have different reactions and symptoms to the measles. Vaccines are important because they help build up an immunity to different pathogens, so you don’t experience the disease. Vaccines prevent the spread of infection by putting a little bit of that virus into you so your immune system can build up resistance to it. They broke the chain that involves the amount of pathogens you have. There were not enough pathogens for the infection to spread. Both of the children ended up immune to the virus.
    6. Some ways the anchor recommends protecting yourself and others from the spread of pathogens would be asking doctors and nurses to wash hands, eat yogurt, and get catheders or tubes out as soon as possible.
    7. My pathogen is named Rotavirus, which is commonly found on faucet handles, places around the bathroom, and on toys. It is spread by dirty hands with fecal material usually from the bathroom. The symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting. The pathogen can be prevented by children not putting toys in their mouth, and washing hands regularly. There are vaccines used, including TotaTeq and Rotarix.

  31. 1. To me a pathogen is a little tiny organism that goes around and infects people and makes them sick
    2. Some places that a pathogen can be found in a home are the faucet, toilet, and shower curtain. You would find a rotavirus on the toilet. You would find salmonella on the sink. On the shower curtain you would be able to find mold.
    3. Something that I learned from the video is that you are spreading germs constantly even though you cannot even see them. Germs multiply by dividing there selves in half. The flavor of food that helped the spread of germs is chocolate.
    4. The process of infection to me is your body somehow comes in contact with the germ. Then the germ will find some way to get into your body through a port of entry. Then it will affect your body if you do not have any type of immunity to it. A website that I think accurately describes the process of infection is http://ezinearticles.com/?Infection-Process-and-Infection-Control&id=3345689.
    5. The story is about Chip and Dale. Vaccines are important because they keep you from getting sick which could eventually save your life. They can help prevent the spread of infection because they keep one person from getting the infection who could of gave it to someone else which could have spread. The part of the chain that they broke is the new host. One of them has to go to the hospital with measles the other fights off the measles.
    6. Some ways to protect you from getting the super bug is to ask doctors and nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out ASAP, and to eat yogurt.
    7. My pathogen
    Name: RSV
Commonly found: snot, tissue, and sneeze
How it is spread: sneezing or coughing on someone or something
Symptoms it causes: cold symptoms runny nose and sneezing
How it is prevented: cover mouth when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands frequently, and refrain from kissing.

  32. 1.In my own words a pathogen is a bacteria or fungus that causes a disease.
    2. Some places pathogens can be found in that home are the bedroom, bathroom, nursery, kitchen, foyer, study room, and in the living room. Some specific places they are in is one the bedroom. The pathogens in the bedroom could be found on your remote, and the pathogen on that would be rotavirus and staph. Another place in the house is the bathroom. Where you could find a pathogen in the bathroom would be on the shower curtain and what you could is mold and tricophyton. Those are only some pathogens you can find in your house.
    3. I learned that some germs are viruses and some germs are bacteria. Also I learned that whatever you touch can be filled with germs and you can give germs to people by touching anything. As germs multiply they spread to more and more places and get bigger. In this video the food participating in the spread of food is a donut.
    4. The process of infection is being infected by a pathogen or disease you got from someone or pretty much anywhere more than one person touches. Things that are necessary for infection to occur are you to touch someone who sneezed or has been infected. Also even touching a door knob which a lot of people who are sick or infected touched. A website I found was actually a video on you tube and it was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHwDmjmvTOg.
    5. The story is about a 5 year old kid who plays with his friend who is sick and his friend gives him pneumonia. The kid gets it healed and is now immune to it because his body made antibodies towards this measles virus. Vaccines are so important because They first of all get rid of your infection and second of all they help your body create anti bodies so that you would be immune to that disease and you can not receive it anymore. The two in the story end up being immune to the disease and can now never receive it again.
    6. Some ways the hospital recommends protecting yourself and loved ones from the infection are first tell your doctor to wash his or her hand. Second is to eat yogurt. Lastly is to get catheters out as soon as possible.
    7. My pathogen is a dust mite. Places commonly found are on pillows, blankets, and bed sheets. This is spread when stuff are not washed thoroughly with warm or hot water. Symptoms it causes are tiny bumps, itchiness, and sneezing. You can prevent it by keeping your environment clean. There is no vaccine.

    1. I would say that a Pathogen is a germ or virus that spreads throughout the body and infects parts of it.
    2. You can find staph and dust mites all over the sheets in the bedroom and you can also find rodents in the garage as long with insects also.
    3. I learned that if you sneeze on your hand that you can get it spread really easy because you touch everything with your hands. They keep multiplying and cover many distances. Doughnuts are the food.
    4. The process of infection is where the infection gets inside you and your body starts to fight it off. http://health.mo.gov/training/epi/DiseaseProcess.html.
    5. The people in the story are Chip and Dale. I think vaccines are important because they help fight off viruses and other things. You can use hand sanitizer and always keep clean. When you get infected you do not usually get the same one again. They both get Measles and 1 suffers but the other does not so they both can not ever get it again. Ask doctors and nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out ASAP, and eat yogurt.
    6. My pathogens name is Spike. Commonly found in the bathroom on curtains and on sheets and furniture. Usually they cling to your clothes and go from place to place. The symptoms are Low blood sugar and your bodys fluids go weird. To cure it is with Intravenous fluids.

  34. 1. A pathogen is an organism we can not see because it is so small. People often forget they are even there but pathogens are the causes for sickness. They can be spread very easily but normally they are easy to get rid of with antibiotics or just rest.
    2. In the tour of the house we find pathogens can be found everwhere. This includes our kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. Some specific examples are the pathogen called mold which can be found in your bathroom. Another example is Rhinovirus found on the video game console in most people living rooms and pseudomonas found in the study.
    3. From this video I learned how easily germs can be spread between people and objects. I also learned our hands carry a lot of germs. Germs sing as they multiple in this video. The flavor of food that participates in the spread of disease is chocolate because the man eats the chocolate donut the girl had touched.
    4. The process of infection is first the pathogen living, then it multiplies and finds a new host. Once inside the new host it can make the host sick. The things that are necessary for infection to occur are a host for the pathogen to infect and a port of entery. Without a port of entery the pathogen would have no way of entering its new host. A YouTube video that explains this prcoess well is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rpj0emEGShQ&feature=related. The reason this video was picked is because we have learned how the pathogen enters our body but we have not really talked about what happens once it is inside. This video is good at explaining what happens to the virus inside us in a way we can understand it
5.This story is about two boys named Chip and Dale. Vaccines are important because most people do not have "asymptomatic infection.” Instead most people will show symptoms and may suffer the consiquences of getting the pathogens. They prevent the spread of an infection by mimicing the pathogen. That way our body can develope natural immunity. In the story Chip gets sick and shows the symptoms but lives gaining the antibodies. Dale on the other hand gets sick but his body already has the antibdies it needs.
    6. The hospital and news anchor rcomends we ask doctors and nurses to wash their hands, get tubes out as soon as you can and eat yogurt while in the hospital to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the spread of the infection.
    7. The pathogen picked was Rotavirus. The name of my pathogen is Rosie . Rosie is commonly found on remote controls, sinks and human hands. She is spread by not washing your hands after using the rest room and touching your mouth. She can only live on dry surfaces for a couple of days. The symptoms she causes are fever, vomiting, watery diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The spread of Rosie can be prevented by washing your hands after using the rest room and before eating. There is a vaccine. Treatment includes drinking more water and allowing your immune system to do the rest.

  35. 1. A pathogen is a microscopic germ that spreads diseases.
    2. Some places that pathogens can be found is in the sofa there can be staph and dust. On the coffee table is rhinovirus. In the bed there are staph and dust mites. On the stove there are E. Coli and Salmonella. The one that groused me out the most was staph on my toothbrush.
    3. What I learned from the video is that germs spread and multiply best in warm, wet and dark places. The germs they divide quickly as they multiply. The flavor that which food participates in the spread disease is when you touch the food then do not eat it and do not washing your hands.
    4. In the process of infection there is first a pathogen then there has to be many pathogens to get a disease, then it passes to another person. The pathogen enters your body by an open wound, mouth, eyes, and nose. After it spreads through the body it can cause a disease by taking over and multiplying in the blood and in the tissues. Then it exits to another host. I got most of this information from this website http://web.biosci.utexas.edu/field/mic361a/steps.htm.
    5. The story is about Chip and Dale and how they react to the measles. I think vaccinations are important, because it helps you fight the disease. So if you do get it the cells will remember how to fight it off. Vaccinations prevent the spreading of the infection and by staying home or not going to school. The part of the chain that they break is where they have the symptoms. In the stories these two boys get measles, but they react differently.
    5. In the video it said some ways the hospital news anchor recommends protecting you from spreading the infection is asking the doctors and nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out as soon as you can, and eat yogurt.
    6. My pathogen name is Rhinovirus. Some places it is found are in a tissue boxes, coffee tables, and warm places. The pathogen spreads by someone touching it and then touches their eyes or nose. Symptoms this pathogen cause is 80% of colds in the fall and one third of colds in general. It can be prevented by emptying the trash everyday and using disinfectant that says it can kill Rhinovirus and following the instructions it has on the container. There is no vaccine for this.

  36. 1) A pathogen to me is a tiny microorganism/germ that causes infection and disease to those who come in contact with them.
    2) There are many germs found throughout the house. The most common places are the toilet seats, door handles, faucets, the floor and children’s toys. Some specific germs are those such as rotavirus on the toilet seat and faucets, staph on the door handles, and RSV and rhinovirus on the children’s toys.
    3) This video taught me that germs love to live in warm, wet, and dark. As the germs are spreading in the video, they sing to show that they are multiplying and making more pathogens. The chocolate assists in the spread of the germs from the lady to the chocolate donut to the man who takes it.
    4) First of all, you must have a pathogen to even spread it. Second, you must have enough of the pathogen to spread the disease. Next, there must be a host that is right for the pathogen. Finally, the pathogen attatches itself to the new host, and the same process starts all over again. A good website to visit for more information about how the pathogens are attained and spread.
    http://ezinearticles.com/?Infection-Process-and-Infection-Control&id=3345689.
    5) The story is about Chip and Dale. Vaccines are important because they can help prevent other people around you and the people of your community from getting sick with the disease. They do not fully prevent the spread of the disease, but they can help to hinder the spreading of the pathogens to other hosts by already injecting the virus into the person so that their body can become immune to it. They break the chain of it spreading to new hosts because the person who gets it usually becomes immune to it and their immune system fights the disease. Chip and Dale end up becoming immune to the measels and Chip has to deal with it for the rest of his life.
    6) To make sure that you do not get diseases at the hospital, ask all doctors to wash their hands, take catheters out ASAP, and to eat a lot of yogurt.

    1. In my words a pathogen is a bacteria, virus, parasite and something else that tries to infect you with disease and bad stuff.
    2. Some places that germs can be found in the house are: the bathroom, the foyer, the kitchen and the study. Specifically you can find mold and dust mites in rugs around your house. Another example is rotavirus on the faucet in the bathroom.
    3. One thing that stood out in the video is that people are so oblivious to the spread of germs. Anytime you touch something you could be spreading germs. Germs spread as they multiply. The flavor of chocolate donuts can help the spread of germs.
    4. The process of infection has 4 parts. First you have to have a pathogen. Next you have to have enough of the pathogen to cause infection. The third is there has to be a susceptible host, and fourth there has to be a path of entry. http://hiptohealth.blogspot.com/p/pathogen-parade.html
    5. The story is about Chip and Dale two young kids who experience immunization on their own. I think Vaccines are important because they can prevent the few severe cases that happen when people get disease and fight it off to become immune. Vaccines help stop the spread of infection because if everyone already has the shot than no one will get infected. This breaks the part of the chain that has to do with a susceptible host because everyone will have the b cells and antibodies to be ready. The two in the story become immune to measles because they developed immunity.
    6. Some ways the news anchor recommends protecting yourself and others from the spread of infection in a hospital is: ask doctors to wash hands, get things that our in your body that have been put in by a doctor out if possible, and eat yogurt.
    7. My pet pathogen is staph bacterium. It can be found on skin and surfaces people touch, such as door handles and light switches. Staph is spread by touch and houseflies from surface to surface. Staph usually causes a consolidation of pus in a spot that can cause fever and chills. You can try and prevent staph by washing hands, keeping wounds covered, and not sharing personal items. A vaccine is being worked on to be able to immunize people from it.

    • A pathogen is a disease or virus that can infect the human body and will spread through contact with others.
    • Some pathogens that can be found in the home are the rhinovirus found on the tissue box, this virus can develop colds. Staph and dust mites can be found in our bedding.
    • In the video I learned that germs can be everywhere inside our mouth on the door and even our food. In the video the germs sing as they multiply. The chocolate doughnut participates in the spread of disease in the video.
    • In the spread of the pathogen the disease is spread by a sneeze. The germ from the sneeze is transferred onto the door handle, which is then touched. The easiest way to stop the spread of the disease is to wash your hands.
    • The story is about Chip and Dale. Both Chip and Dale play with a boy infected with the measles Chip develops the disease and has symptoms his body creates b cells and he is now immune to the disease. Dale develops the disease as well but without the symptoms his body creates the b cells and he is now immune. Vaccines are important because they take the risk of developing symptoms away. The vaccine will help your body become immune to the disease without the horrible symptoms.
    • Some ways to prevent the disease from spreading is asking the doctors and nurses to wash their hands. Remove catheters as soon as possible. Finally just eat yogurt.

  39. 1. A pathogen is any type of germ that could possibly cause infection or disease when handled incorrectly or given room to grow.

    2. Some places pathogens are found in the home are the bathroom, the kitchen, and the bedroom. For example, the shower curtain, the kitchen sink, and our beds. Shower curtains hold germs such as sphingomonas, kitchen sinks hold campylobacter, and beds hold E-Coli.

    3. As germs multiply, they continue to grow in size and length. (Could not find answer outside video)

    4. The process of infection lies in four steps: 1) you have to have the germ. 2) You have to have a large supply of that certain pathogen for it to show you symptoms and cause infection. 3) The germ needs a host... Most likely you. You need to be weak enough to acquire the sickness it is there to inflict. 4) The germ must have a way to get into your body-an entry way. Visit health.mo.gov/training/epi/DisaeseProcess.html for a full description.

    5. The story is about 2 guys, one named Chip, and one named Dale. Chip plays with someone who has measles, and soon after receives symptoms of the dreadful illness... Finally, he goes to the doctor and gets treatment and heals; his body will never have to go through that again. Next, Dale also plays with someone with measles, but does not receive symptoms, yet his immune system will never have to fight it again. Personally, vaccines are important because they prevent specific types of germs from entering your body, and eventually affecting your homeostasis. They prevent the spread of infection by strengthening your immune system to be susceptible to that specific disease or infection. This breaks the third link in the process chain, where the germ finds a host susceptible to it.

    6. The news anchor recommended to wash your hands, ask nurses and doctors to wash their hands, eat Greek yogurt, and get catheters out as soon as possible- to protect yourself and loved ones from the spread of infection.
    7. I chose to do Staph for my pet germ. I like to call him, staphaniah (like Zephaniah). He is usually found around bathroom sinks, light switches, door knobs, toothbrushes, and cupboards-pretty much any place we can, and will touch, frequently. He is spread by living on your skin, then finding an entry way inside of you. Then, once infected, you can spread it to others by touching, talking, or being close to them. The symptoms consist of boils, painful rashes, and Cellulitis, which is a deep infection of the skin. Unfortunately, I did not see that there is a current vaccine for staph, but you can help prevent it by washing your hands, keeping wounds covered, and avoiding sharing personal items such as towels, clothing, and sheets.

    1. In my own words, a pathogen is an unwanted host in the human body that inhibits normal functions.
    2. In the house I found multiple places for germs to be hiding, an example would be in the bathroom, where salmonella was found on the shower curtain. (This now makes me think twice to touch the shower curtain!)
    3. In the short video, I learned that germs are on food, which is really gross. The germs are singing a song? And the food in the video was doughnuts, specifically chocolate.
    4. In my own words, an infection needs a dark moist place to grow with a constant supply of oxygen and food. A basement would be a good place for bacteria to grow, or any object that is in a dark location.

    5. The story is about chip and dale, two 5 year old children. Vaccines are important because they prepare our body for the infection that way we can fight it off. They prevent the spread of infection by putting a tiny bit of dead infection in the body that way the person is immune to it. The two children break the chain because Dale already had b-cells to fight them off therefore the infection could not spread. In the end of the story chip and dale both recover and are fine.

    1) In my own words I would say pathogens are germs that can cause your body to become sick. Pathogens can be found on multiple surfaces from a door knob to our very own sinks. We should really use hand sanitizer and wash our hands more often to help stop the spread of pathogens.
    2) Pathogens can be found on floor mats, shower curtains, and even our shoes! Dust, pollen, mold, pseudomonas, and E.Coli. I honestly never thought that wearing a sweatshirt could bring pollen and pet dander into my home.
    3) I learned that pathogens spread rapidly and easy. The germs sing as they multiply. The food was donuts and the flavors were glazed, chocolate, and sprinkled.
    4) The process of infection is like passing germs off to another person. Things necessary for infection to occur is pathogens, carrier, a host, and a new host. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TabletopGame/PathogenTheInfected?from=Main.PathogenTheInfected this website describes how pathogens travel and such.
    5) The news anchor tells you specifically to ask the Dr. and nurses to wash their hands, get catheters out as soon as possible, and eat yogurt.
    6) R.B.V. (really bad virus) This pathogen would be found on the more common things in our lives. Like door knobs, sinks, bed sheets, and clothes. This pathogen would spread by direct contact with a new host. You can help stop the spread of R.B.V. By washing your hands, using hand sanitizer, and washing clothes and bed sheets weekly.

  42. 1. A pathogen is a little tiny germ or bug that makes people sick.

    2. Pathogens can be found all over the house. Dust can be found on bookshelves, televisions, dressers, and other surfaces. Dust mites can be found in your carpet pretty much anywhere in the house. Staph can be found on any door knob in your house.

    3. From the video on how germs are spread, I learned that germs are in more places than I think and I should wash my hands more often, especially after touching something dirty. When the germs multiply, they sing and dance. The chocolate donut is touched by the lady carrying the germs. When the man eats the donut, he then gets the germs.

    4. First, for an infection to spread there has to obviously be a pathogen. Then, there must be enough of the pathogen to attack your or someone else's immune system. Next, there must be a host- someone or something to carry the pathogen. Finally, there has to be a way for the pathogen to enter the body. The easiest ways for a pathogen to enter the body are through the mouth, the nose, the eyes, or a cut. The best website I could find that explains this process well is this website: http://hiptohealth.blogspot.com/p/pathogen-parade.html .

    5. The link on vaccines is about two 5-year-olds named Chip and Dale. Vaccines are importnat so that we can build an immunity to dieseases without suffering from the symptoms. Vaccines are also important so that we can't give the disease to other people. Vaccines stop the spread of infection by making people immune to certain diseases, and therefore, unable to spread the disease. It breaks the third chain. If you get a vaccine, you can't become a host.

    6. The pathogen I chose is escherichia coli, or E. coli for short. I call him Ed Collin. I found him on the cutting board in my kitchen. E. coli can be spread through raw or undercooked meat. It can cause stomach ache, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. You can prevent E. coli by washing your hands and any materials used after handling raw meat and avoid eating raw or undercooked meat. There is no vaccine for E. coli.
